Description: Shows four slaves at work in a tobacco house. In the lower left-hand corner, a female slave sits on the ground and strips (?) the tobacco leaves (1). Behind her, another slave twists tobacco (2), while a third slave (3) puts it on a roll. Drying tobacco leaves hang upside down from the rafters (4). In the background, a mother and child work hanging leaves. Title: Scene in a Lynchburg tobacco factory
Description: Illustration is included in Chapter LXI, "A Visit to Lynchburg in Virginia," and corresponds with the following passage, which clearly aims to present the tobacco factories in a positive, and even romantic light: "It [Lynchburg] has thirty-five tobacco factories, employing great numbers of negroes, men, women, and children. These negroes earn good wages, work faithfully, and turn out vast quantities of the black, ugly compound known as "plug," which has enslaved so many thousands, and promoted such a sublime disregard for the proprieties in the matter of expectoration. . . . In the maufacturies the negro is the same cheery, capricious being that one finds him in the cotton or sugar-cane fields; he sings quaintly over his toil, and seems entirely devoid of the sullen ambition which many of our Northern factory laborers exhibit. The men and women working around the tables in the basements of the Lynchburg tobacco establishments croon eccentric hymns in concert all day long; and their little children, laboring before they are hardly large enough to go alon, join in the refrains." Description: Advertisement showing the five-story manufactory and storefront covered in signage of the tobacco and grocery business at 111 Race Street, i.e. the 300 block of Race Street. Within the first-floor window and entryways, a patron enters the store near a wall of shelved good and boxes on the floor; a clerk organizes canisters; and other employees check a list and move a crate. At the upper floor windows, boxes, barrels, and sacks are piled and employees work. In front of the store, laborers unload and transport boxes from a horse-drawn dray parked in the street. Crates and barrels line the sidewalk near the dray. Also shows partial views of adjacent buildings. Jacob Mayland established his tobacco business circa 1803 and operated from the 300 block of Race Street beginning in 1805. Description: View showing the former coffee house and merchants' exchange. Shows building tenanted by Ulrich & Brother's Tobacco & Segar Store (100 Market). Crates stand piled near the entranceways and striped poles and window shutters adorn the building. Also shows the adjacent men's and boys' clothing stores operated by Philip Hunt (100 Market) and William Umberger (102 Market); merchandise on display; a handcart resting idle on Front Street; and a conestoga wagon parked near a pile of barrels on the sidewalk. Also shows a doll standing on one of the piles of crates in front of the tobacco store. Trade cards, tickets, invitations, and labels represent primarily Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New York, Cincinnati and Chicago businesses and organizations, including printers and art supply dealers; perfume, patent medicine, wine, dry goods, and clothing dealers; doctors and dentists; bankers and brokers; and manufacturers. The materials contain patriotic, agricultural, and transportation vignettes, views of buildings, anaglyptography (i.e., medal engraving), allegorical figures, and Centennial Exhibition (1876) imagery. Sheet music covers, predominantly printed by Ehrgott & Fobriger, depict mainly genre and Civil War scenes, portraiture, including images of entertainers, and advertisements such as "Sewing Machine Polka." Work by the Cincinnati lithographers also include several book illustrations depicting Ohio and Cincinnati asylums, institutes, seminaries, and landmarks, as well as uncut sheets of views of cemetery monuments for "The Cincinnati Cemetery of Spring Grove..."
