Title: Jeff. Davis., the compromiser, in a tight place
Description: Cartoon expressing Northern exasperation with Jefferson Davis's attempt to negotiate for peace in 1865. Depicts Davis being slammed between the doors of the "United States Senate" by Uncle Sam and an armed Zouave soldier. Davis carrying on his back a bundle of "Compromise Goods. Latest Styles" begs the unsympathetic soldier to let him alone as Uncle Sam holding a noose declares that Davis has cheated him too often and deserves execution. In the left, an African American man, portrayed in racist caricature, holds a "Trinkets" box and says in the vernacular, "It pears to me, Massa Davis bring his goods to de wrong market dis time. Description: View showing a horse-drawn Philadelphia Brewing Company float on the 300 block of South Broad Street during the Founder's Week parade. The float with a financial theme contains white men costumed as "Uncle Sam" and a late 17th-century gentleman near a chest labeled "State Treasury" and stacks of money bags. Float also contains a banner inscribed with the annual amounts of local, state, and federal taxes paid by Philadelphia brewers. Also shows a large crowd of spectators, including African American men, women, and children, seated in viewing stands decorated with bunting and standing along the street. A white man police officer stands in front of the crowd. Partial view of Chambers-Wylie Memorial Presbyterian Church (321 S. Broad) is visible in the background. Founder’s Week celebrated the 225th anniversary of the founding of Philadelphia, October 4-10, 1908. Title: Uncle Sam protecting his property against the encroachments of his cousin John
Description: Print depicting Uncle Sam grabbing John Bull by the neck showing upset over intervention in the Civil War. Uncle Sam, depicted as a Union soldier closely resembling Abraham Lincoln, holds a sword labeled, "Principle of Non-Enterference." He pulls John Bull by the back of his neck who is poaching plants from a garden. John Bull is attired in a military uniform and cannons on his legs labeled, "Armstrong's Patent," referring to English manufactured weapons used by the Confederates. Standing on a fence post in the left is a cock with the face of Napoleon III, who watches the scene. In the background is an oversized scarecrow with a sign that reads, "All persons tresspassing[sic] these premisses, will be punished according to Law." The corpses of the dead bodies of Confederate general P.G.T. Beauregard and Confederate president Jefferson Davis hang from nooses from the scarecrow's arms. Title: No more Chinese cheap labor. Celluloid cuffs, collars & bosoms
Description: Trade card containing an illustration depicting a racist scene with the figures of Uncle Sam and America, and a Chinese man laundry worker. In the left, the laundry worker, wearing his hair in a queue and attired in a long-sleeved, orange tunic; long, wide-legged, white pants; and orange slip-on, cloth shoes; sits on an over-turned wooden wash tub. His eyes are closed, and he holds his head down in his left hand. His left leg is crossed over his right, and his right hand is on his left ankle. To his left, the white woman figure of Columbia/America, looks down at the laundry worker and points up with her right hand. In her left hand, she holds up a shield with the pattern of the American flag and marked "Invention." She wears her dark hair pulled back to the nape of her neck and is attired in a gown with the pattern of the American flag, a red and blue cap adorned with a white star, and sandals. An open box of spilled starch lies between her feet and those of the laundry worker. Behind the laundry worker, is a laundry iron on a shelf, Chinese characters written on a wall, and Uncle Sam resting his arms on the ledge of an opening in the wall. Uncle Sam has red hair and a beard and is attired in a top hat, a blue jacket with a white star pattern, a red neck tie, and white shirt with the collar turned up. He looks at America. Above his head is the sign "Gon Up Chinese Laundry." Patented during the 1860s and 70s, separable celluloid collars, unlike separable paper collars, were waterproof and longer lasting, as well as fashionable and affordable. Following the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the celluloid collar industry leveraged the racist legislation to promote the use of celluloid collars as patriotic and as a means to make Chinese launderers obsolete and to facilitate the end of Chinese immigration., Title from item., Date inferred from content., Includes advertising text printed on verso: A New Improvement-Patented.
