- View of the sculpture designed by renown sculptors Daniel Chester French and Edward Clark Potter for the Court of Honor lagoon at the Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. The African American man teamster, attired in a sleeveless shirt, his muscular arms exposed, and pants cinched at the waist and ankles with rope, stands by the front leg of his draught horse. His legs slightly apart, his left hand behind his back, the laborer rests his right elbow on the shoulder of the yoked and harnessed animal. The statuary, the base marked "E.C. Potter" and "D.C. - Depicts an older African American woman, with a stern expression, her arms crossed in front of her body, standing next to her brick home at Jessup and Irving Streets in Philadelphia. According to the photographer, the home is "a good example of a skilled mechanics home - the middle class of from 60 to 80 years ago," and that the woman was coaxed in to allowing the photograph after he described her house as "quaint" and she as "beautiful." Today this house is connected to the one behind it on Quince Street. Plaques on Quince Street house list builder of both buildings as Henry Vollum in 1813; the architect of additions and alterations made in 1924 was Wetherill P. Andrew Pears first produced and sold Pears soap in 1807. In 1835, his grandson Francis Pears joined the business, and the firm was renamed A. & F. Pears. Freed in Virginia by Lawrence, a military nurse, Fannie was publicized as the "redeemed slave child" baptized by Henry Ward Beecher at Plymouth Church in Brooklyn in May 1863. - Lantern slide with three sequential scenes from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s "Uncle Tom’s Cabin." Depicts scenes from chapters 26, 40, and 41. Chapter 26 image shows the deathbed scene of Eva St. Clair. Shows Eva in bed, seated up, holding a bouquet of flowers in her lap, and surrounded by people. Eva's parents Mr. and Mrs. St. Clare sit on either side of the bed and Miss Ophelia kneels and cries behind Mr. St. Clare. Mrs. St. Clare holds a fan, has a handkerchief in her lap, and looks toward Eva. Mr. St. Claire, rests his head in one hand, and has his other hand on the bed. In front of Eva, the enslaved men and women of the household, including Tom, kneel, stand, pray, hold handkerchiefs, and cry. The setting also includes a window with open drapes, a curtain behind Eva's bed, and a side table adorned with a vase of flowers. Chapter 40 scene represents the beating of Tom by his enslaver Simon Legree following the escape of the enslaved Cassy and Emmeline. Shows Tom, with grey hair, a grey beard, and barefooted, lying on a pile of cotton on the floor of a shed. Legree stands over him with one hand clenched in a fist toward his chest and the other clenched by his side as he raises up one of his feet. Chapter 41 scene shows an adult George Shelby visiting with the beaten and dying Tom after locating him in order to see if he "couldn't buy him back." Shows Tom lying on a pile of cotton near the opening to a shed. An open book lies near him by his hand. Shelby leans over Tom and holds his hand. - Full-length portrait of the popular New York minstrel performer and manager in Blackface and costumed as a disheveled 18th-century gentleman. Bryant stands posed with his right hand on his hip and his left hand holding a sword to the ground while looking up to the left. Known for his versatility as a comedian, actor, dancer, and musician, Bryant was most famous for his rendition of the dance, "Essence of Old Virginny," and for popularizing the songs "Dixie," "Turkey in the Straw," and "Shoo Fly." He performed in Philadelphia in September 1856. "Blackface minstrelsy is a popular entertainment form, originating in the United States in the mid-19th century and remaining in American life through the 20th century. - Boudoir card depicting a photographic reproduction of an allegorical Civil War painting by Paul Philippoteaux, possibly a panel from one of his four versions of "The Gettysburg Cyclorama." Shows a figure resembling General George McClellan pointing to Lincoln, his hand on his chest and standing on the steps of a pavilion. A white and African American man stand next to Lincoln. The pavilion is comprised of a tent adorned with ornate shields and stone columns marked "Union" and "Liberty." Urns rest atop the columns. Smoke rises from them. A large statue of the figure of Liberty rises over the pavilion. Inside the pavilion, men in suits sit at a long table at which two other men, one in shirt sleeves, stand and sign documents. A crowd of men stand behind and beside the table. Near the "Liberty" column in the right, a white man breaks the shackles of a male slave as armed African Americans rush by. Troops of soldiers march around the pavilion in front of cheering men, women, and children, including blacksmiths near an anvil, flags, and a shield in the right foreground. In the left foreground, an older man holds the reigns of a rider less grey horse next to a man astride a black horse. In the left background, the U.S. Capitol is visible and in the right background ironclads sail on the ocean. French artist Paul Phillipoteaux was commissioned to create the Gettysburg Cyclorama painting in 1879. Depicting Pickett's charge, he created four versions, with the first completed in 1883 and displayed in Chicago. The second version was first shown in Boston in 1884, with the third and fourth versions shown in Philadelphia and New York in 1886. Two of the four versions are known to be extant (Chicago and Boston). - Series of caricatures predominately satirizing the effects of the presidential policies of Abraham Lincoln on his re-election and the candidacy of Democratic nominee and former Commander of the U.S. Army, George McClellan, in the presidential election of 1864. Lincoln caricatures depict racist scenes and themes of election loss and show the president as a comic stage performer; a feeding open-mouthed tool of the abolitionists; as a defeated Robin Hood with his "Band of Brothers," (i.e. cabinet members Edwin Stanton, William Seward, and Gideon Welles); as weighed down by the "Old Keystone", a visual metaphor for the large number of Pennsylvania soldiers lost in the war; as a buffoon tripped up by his large boots of "military necessity"; as patronizing a miniature McClellan propped up on the "Chicago Platform"; as McClellan's puppeteer; and as "loved little and long" for his emancipation of the enslaved. McClellan caricatures primarily use the themes of McClellan, known as "The Young Napoleon," as a "MacNapoleon" and his contradictory personal and party platforms in relation to the war. Caricatures show "MacNapoleon" searching for the White House, childishly whining about his quest for the White house, and singing a "doleful ditty" about himself. Platform caricatures show McClellan as a squeeze doll who speaks two words - war and peace, and in a "Quandary" to choose between a ballerina representing war and another representing peace. - Bust-length portrait of Carlton Miller Tanner (ca. 1869-1933), the African Methodist Episcopal clergyman, missionary, author, and brother of artist Henry Ossawa Tanner. Depicts Tanner, his head turned slightly right, attired in a white clerical collar; dark-colored, button-down vest; and dark-colored jacket with notched lapels. His hair is cropped short and he wears a mustache. Tanner, born in Philadelphia, was a graduate of the Institute of Colored Youth and Divinity School of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. Holding a Doctor of Divinity from Wilberforce University, Payne Theological Seminary, Tanner began work as a pastor about 1893 and presided over the A.M.E. churches Big Bethel Church (Atlanta, Ga.) in the early 1900s and Metropolitan Church A.M.E. (Washington D.C.) between 1917 and 1922. Tanner also established the South African Christian Recorder in 1902 and wrote a "Manual of the A.M.E. Church." - Composite photograph created through the "paste-up" technique of cut-up negatives that are arranged, pasted together, and then rephotographed to present a realistic scene. Depicts a group of eminent Victorian women, including authors, writers, and women's rights, temperance, and abolitionist movements advocates, "posed" in the Montreal residence of railway financier George Stephens. Sitters (left to right), in the background, and standing, include: Mary A. Livermore; Sara Jewett; Grace A. Oliver; Helen Hunt; Nora Perry; Lucy Larcom; and Frances Hodgson Burnett. Sitters (left to right), in the foreground, and seated, include: Elizabeth Stuart Phelps; Louise Chandler Moulton; Louisa M. Alcott; Julia Ward Howe; and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Backdrop interior imagery shows parts of the reception hall, drawing room, stairwell, and conservatory of the Stephens' residence. Vases, a mantel, light fixtures, drapery, and a fountain are included in the backdrop. Pictorial details of foliage and a pond surround the portrait within a circular frame. Canadian photographer William Notman created the original portrait negatives used in the composite created by L'Africain. - Cartoon satirizing the imprisonment at Fort Monroe, Va. of Confederate president Jefferson Davis, detained by Union cavalry troops on May 10, 1865, while wearing his wife's overcoat and shawl as a disguise. Shows an African American soldier escorting Davis to a cell door at the "Hotel De Monroe." In front of the door a noose hangs. Davis, attired in a bonnet, shawl, and overcoat, holds a money bag labeled "JD. CSA" (an allusion to Davis's confiscation of the remaining Confederate treasury). The soldier holds a bayonet to which a skirt hoop is attached and speaks in the vernacular "Hi dar! Show dis ole lady a room..." In the background, a smiling sun, an African American soldier, and a ship sailing the bay are visible.
