The company was founded as the Atlantic Petroleum Storage Company in 1866 as a storage facility but quickly expanded operations to include refining as the possible uses of petroleum were discovered. It was purchased by John D. Rockefeller in 1874 and became part of the Standard Oil Trust and became Atlantic Refining Company after the Trust was dissolved in 1911. Title: An east prospect of the city of Philadelphia taken by George Heap from the Jersey shore, under the direction of Nicholas Scull surveyor general of the province of Pennsylvania
Description: Anniversary reproduction of the contracted Scull & Heap panoramic cityscape view originally published by London engraver Thomas Jeffreys in 1756 showing Philadelphia from across the Delaware River. Depicts the riverfront (South to Vine streets) developed with residential and mercantile buildings, piers and wharves, and major landmarks. Landmarks (numbered in the print) include Christ Church, the State House, Presbyterian Church, Dutch Calvinist Church, the Court House, Quaker Meeting House, High Street Wharf, Mulberry, Sassafrass, Vine and Chestnut streets, the drawbridge, and "cornmill" on Windmill Island. Pedestrian traffic is visible along the riverfront and heavy maritime traffic, including a ferry transporting cattle to New Jersey, dominates the foreground. Also contains insets of "The Battery" (built 1747 at the foot of Wharton Street), "The State House," and "A Plan of the City of Philadelphia" (street grid); "A description of the situation, harbour &c of the city and port of Philadelphia" with a legend corresponding to the numbered landmarks; and text and charts explicating "Philadelphia in 1854" that expand upon the original description. Description: View of the Arch Street ferry terminal on the Delaware River. Depicts Philadelphia's busy waterfront and includes sailing ships, warehouses, bartering merchants, and dock workers weighing, as well as loading, barrels and bundles of produce onto carts. Others, including white women, are fishing and enjoying the view. To the far left of an unoccupied dock, dock workers, including an African American man, move large bundles. At the turn of the nineteenth century ferries were the main source of transportation to Southern New Jersey.
