Title: Stand pipe. For West Philada. Water Works
Description: View showing the proposed design for a standpipe with an ornate spiral staircase and statute of George Washington to be erected at Thirty-Fifth and Sycamore streets as part of the Twenty Fourth Ward Water Works (i.e., West Philadelphia Water Works). Individuals gaze up at the stucture from its base as other men and women ascend the staircase and view the vista from the observation deck. Completed circa 1855, without the statue, after the designs of engineers Birkinbine & Trotter, the standpipe served as a reservoir for the waterworks located on the west bank of the Schuylkill River above the Fairmount Dam. Description: View showing the engineering crew using a windlass to raise the standpipe in a large field at the corner of Tulpehocken Street and Wayne Avenue on August 13, 1851. Several men work large cranks, in the foreground and background, as others guide the lifting, including a man elevated on a section of the hoisting apparatus. In the right, the foreman talks to two men in white coats, probably the engineers, while another group of well-dressed men converse to the left near a small crowd of spectators. Two workers carry pulley ropes while they walk toward the lass. Another laborer grabs a bucket with one hand as he holds the unwinding rope of one of the cranks with the other. Pasture land is visible in the background. The Germantown Water Company delivered water from the location 1851-1872. In the foreground, visitors to the property partake of the grounds that are landscaped with trees and small gardens. Elegantly-attired men, women, and children stroll; appreciate the vista from benches and chairs; and enjoy refreshments at tables. Other patrons depart in horse-drawn carriages down a path that winds past the Belmont Water Works and Columbia Railroad Bridge. A train approaches the bridge. In the right background, the proposed Centennial Exhibition buildings, and grounds congested with visitors, are visible in West Fairmount Park. The Main Hall and Memorial Hall predominate. Description: Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive.
