The square, described by visitors in the 1850s as a bucolic haven within the city, was previously used as a pasture, a burial ground for the neighboring German Reformed Church, and a drilling ground for troops. This 1860 winter view shows the many trees of the square lining paths that had been fitted with rows of small stools to discourage loitering. The square also contained a noted central marble fountain built in 1837 that can be seen in the c.1870 photograph below. Title: Fashions for fall & winter 1856-7 by A. F. Ward no. 125 Chestnut Street Philadelphia
Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 21 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene with 5 men, 2 women, 2 boys and a girl socializing. The men wear suits, with light colored pants, vests, and dark bow ties, and hold hats, canes, and an overcoat. One man wears a jacket with tails. The boys wear military inspired suits, a cape, and cap and hold an overcoat. The girl wears a jacket, skirt, a petticoat and a cap. The women wear dresses with hoop skirts that are adorned with lace and bowties. One also wears a bonnet and jacket and the other wears gloves and holds a handkerchief. Furnishings include a sofa, chair, side table, patterned carpeting, and a fireplace mantle adorned with candelabras. Lower panel shows 9 men, a woman, and a boy in front of a snow-covered riverbank and residence in the background. Most of the men wear overcoats, striped or patterned trousers, and carry canes. All of the men wear top hats and one wears a scarf wrapped around his neck. The boy wears a jacket, trousers, and cap and the woman (part of a couple) is attired in a riding habit. Title: Stein & Jones, steam power printers & lithographers, no. 321 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement calendar for 1865 containing patriotic and seasonal vignettes, scenes, and allegorical figures framing a calendar. Upper corners contain an autumnal and winter scene. Autumnal scene shows a farmer at his plow with farmhands reaping wheat in the background and a yard of farm animals in the foreground. Winter scene shows individuals skating on a pond as a sled passes by, near a couple talking to a soldier under the gaze of two dogs. Dwellings and a train also comprise the landscape of the scenes. Lower corners contain the the breast-bearing female allegorical figures of Spring and Summer. Spring holds a sprig of flowers and Summer holds a basket of fruit. Patriotic imagery includes a battle scene, and the figure of Columbia surrounded by flags and soldiers, including an injured private, and another passing a laurel wreath to a fellow compatriot. Other vignettes show an artist working at a drawing table, and a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 21 elegantly attired men, women, and children in outdoor settings. Scenes surrounded by a border designed as bare tree branches. Upper panel shows five men, three women, and two boys dressed in autumn clothing. All of the men wear jackets, vests, and cravats. Some wear, or hold, top hats, and one man sports a double-breasted coat. One woman is attired in a long-sleeve, high-collared dress, and wears a hat adorned with a feather. She is about to clasp the hand of a boy standing with her, who is dressed similarly to the men in the image, with a long waisted jacket and pants. The woman in the center is attired in pearls, bangles, and an elaborate, shoulder-bearing dress with a flounced skirt. The woman to her right shows only her profile, and is covered in a bonnet and ruffled shawl over her skirt. Another boy, dressed in a cropped jacket, pants, and a cap, stands nearby. Description: Panoramic and bustling, winter view showing several men, women, and children, on the ice-covered river. In the center foreground, a small crowd gathers around a man reading a newspaper as around them, throngs of individuals traverse the frozen walkway, promenade as couples, make conversation, and fall, laugh, and grab one another as they slip on the ice. Several men skate, boys sled, dogs chase each other, and children frolic, including a pair retrieving a hat from a broken patch of ice. Others peddle refreshments from a table and flee from broken ice as ruffians engage in a fist fight. The cityscape of Philadelphia is visible in the background, including Christ Church and Independence Hall in addition to Spark's Shot Tower and Girard College. Illustrations depict a Style B, No. 7 sewing machine; a little girl bundled in winter clothing picking berries in the snow; a profile portrait superimposed over white flowers of a girl wearing a hat; and juxtaposed domestic scenes. Domestic scene images include a central view showing a mother seated at her American sewing machine, surrounded by her three children.
