Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 21 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene with 5 men, 2 women, 2 boys and a girl socializing. The men wear suits, with light colored pants, vests, and dark bow ties, and hold hats, canes, and an overcoat. One man wears a jacket with tails. The boys wear military inspired suits, a cape, and cap and hold an overcoat. The girl wears a jacket, skirt, a petticoat and a cap. The women wear dresses with hoop skirts that are adorned with lace and bowties. One also wears a bonnet and jacket and the other wears gloves and holds a handkerchief. Furnishings include a sofa, chair, side table, patterned carpeting, and a fireplace mantle adorned with candelabras. Description: Advertisement calendar for 1865 containing patriotic and seasonal vignettes, scenes, and allegorical figures framing a calendar. Upper corners contain an autumnal and winter scene. Autumnal scene shows a farmer at his plow with farmhands reaping wheat in the background and a yard of farm animals in the foreground. Winter scene shows individuals skating on a pond as a sled passes by, near a couple talking to a soldier under the gaze of two dogs. Dwellings and a train also comprise the landscape of the scenes. Lower corners contain the the breast-bearing female allegorical figures of Spring and Summer. Spring holds a sprig of flowers and Summer holds a basket of fruit. Patriotic imagery includes a battle scene, and the figure of Columbia surrounded by flags and soldiers, including an injured private, and another passing a laurel wreath to a fellow compatriot. Other vignettes show an artist working at a drawing table, and a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone. Upper panel shows five men, three women, and two boys dressed in autumn clothing. All of the men wear jackets, vests, and cravats. Some wear, or hold, top hats, and one man sports a double-breasted coat. One woman is attired in a long-sleeve, high-collared dress, and wears a hat adorned with a feather. She is about to clasp the hand of a boy standing with her, who is dressed similarly to the men in the image, with a long waisted jacket and pants. Title: The terrible conflagration at Ninth and Washington Streets, Philadelphia On the morning of Wednesday February 8th 1865
Description: Disaster print showing the scene at the "disastrous conflagration commenced in the storage yard [of Blackburn & Co.] at Ninth & Washington Street" in the early morning hours of February 8, 1865. In the foreground, displaced and panicked residents of all ages attired in their night clothes, many holding their few possessions, run down and gather on the snowy streets. Amongst the commotion, police officers assist residents with their possessions (trunks, bedding, and cookware) and direct firefighters toward the blaze and burnt ruins of and surrounding the coal yard. The firefighters transport a ladder, hoses, and hose carriage toward the burning buildings as other volunteers rush to smother a man on fire and comfort a fleeing girl. Others depicted at the scene include two men laying an unconscious man attired in a nightshirt on the ground; a man and woman clutching their children to their chests; and a woman falling and dropping her baby in her flight as a dog runs past them. In the background, a small number of survivors and firefighters carrying victims, run down the 1100 block of Ninth Street that is lined with burning and destroyed buildings. Across from the coal yard, presumably the proprietor, James McManus, holds a bundle, and prepares to exit the doorway of the "Lager Beer Saloon" on the northeast corner of Washington Avenue and Ninth Street. Description: Anti-labor union cartoon satirizing the several New York workers' strikes for higher wages in early 1836 during a harsh winter; a period of severe inflation, including exorbitant market prices; and an era of property speculation. Depicts livestock on strike for a higher market value near fish peddlers attired in winter garb, including two African American shellfish vendors. Animals include a Tom turkey ordering a turkey hen not to sell her young ones because "gobblers will bring twenty shillings and hens fifteen"; hens refusing to lay eggs for "less than four pence a piece"; a pig holding a banner inscribed "Hams 15 cents per lb exclaiming "I shall Jew them out of a shilling a pound"; an indignant lamb and calf conferring about their deserved increased prices per pound; and a confident steer exhorting the range of high prices for ordinary beef, corn fed beef, and beef shins. Description: Print commemorating the passage of the Fifteenth Amendment containing a large central scene of the celebratory parade held in Baltimore in May surrounded by several bust portraits and vignettes. Parade is led by several African American Zoaves down Monument Street, which is lined with African American and white men, women, and children spectators. Bust-length portraits of African American civil rights supporters above and to the sides of this scene include Abraham Lincoln; Baltimore jurist Hugh Lennox Bond; abolitionist John Brown; Vice-President Schuyler Colfax; President Grant; Pennsylvania representative Thaddeus Stevens; Maryland representative Henry Davis; Massachusetts senator Charles Sumner; Martin Robinson Delaney; Frederick Douglass; and Mississippi Senator Hiram Revels.
