Description: Album of photographs, predominately half stereographs, of landscape views of Philadelphia and Bucks County. Images include views of Frankford Creek, Tohickon Creek, Wissahickon Creek, Tacony Creek, Pleasantville, Crescentville, Germantown, Fairmount Park near the water works, and winter scenery. Also contains photographs of Stenton, Woodlands Cemetery, the Desilverwood Estate (Holmesburg), the Burd family monuments at St. Stephen's Church (Philadelphia), the city garden of Joseph R. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 21 elegantly attired men, women, and children in outdoor settings. Scenes surrounded by a border designed as bare tree branches. Upper panel shows five men, three women, and two boys dressed in autumn clothing. All of the men wear jackets, vests, and cravats. Some wear, or hold, top hats, and one man sports a double-breasted coat. One woman is attired in a long-sleeve, high-collared dress, and wears a hat adorned with a feather. She is about to clasp the hand of a boy standing with her, who is dressed similarly to the men in the image, with a long waisted jacket and pants. The woman in the center is attired in pearls, bangles, and an elaborate, shoulder-bearing dress with a flounced skirt. Title: The terrible conflagration at Ninth and Washington Streets, Philadelphia On the morning of Wednesday February 8th 1865
Description: Disaster print showing the scene at the "disastrous conflagration commenced in the storage yard [of Blackburn & Co.] at Ninth & Washington Street" in the early morning hours of February 8, 1865. In the foreground, displaced and panicked residents of all ages attired in their night clothes, many holding their few possessions, run down and gather on the snowy streets. Amongst the commotion, police officers assist residents with their possessions (trunks, bedding, and cookware) and direct firefighters toward the blaze and burnt ruins of and surrounding the coal yard. The firefighters transport a ladder, hoses, and hose carriage toward the burning buildings as other volunteers rush to smother a man on fire and comfort a fleeing girl. Description: Anti-labor union cartoon satirizing the several New York workers' strikes for higher wages in early 1836 during a harsh winter; a period of severe inflation, including exorbitant market prices; and an era of property speculation. Depicts livestock on strike for a higher market value near fish peddlers attired in winter garb, including two African American shellfish vendors. Animals include a Tom turkey ordering a turkey hen not to sell her young ones because "gobblers will bring twenty shillings and hens fifteen"; hens refusing to lay eggs for "less than four pence a piece"; a pig holding a banner inscribed "Hams 15 cents per lb exclaiming "I shall Jew them out of a shilling a pound"; an indignant lamb and calf conferring about their deserved increased prices per pound; and a confident steer exhorting the range of high prices for ordinary beef, corn fed beef, and beef shins. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 21 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene with 5 men, 2 women, 2 boys and a girl socializing. The men wear suits, with light colored pants, vests, and dark bow ties, and hold hats, canes, and an overcoat. One man wears a jacket with tails. The boys wear military inspired suits, a cape, and cap and hold an overcoat. The girl wears a jacket, skirt, a petticoat and a cap. The women wear dresses with hoop skirts that are adorned with lace and bowties. One also wears a bonnet and jacket and the other wears gloves and holds a handkerchief. Furnishings include a sofa, chair, side table, patterned carpeting, and a fireplace mantle adorned with candelabras. Lower panel shows 9 men, a woman, and a boy in front of a snow-covered riverbank and residence in the background. Most of the men wear overcoats, striped or patterned trousers, and carry canes. All of the men wear top hats and one wears a scarf wrapped around his neck. The boy wears a jacket, trousers, and cap and the woman (part of a couple) is attired in a riding habit. Most of the depicted men have a mustache, sideburns, or both.
