Title: Amy Smith, April 17, 1876
Description: Half-length portrait of Smith, a young African American woman, posed to the left. She looks forward toward the viewer. She wears a plaid-patterned garment, a white, upturned collar, and a bowtie-like ribbon at her neck. Her hair is pulled back and she wears a hair band. Smith, born in Virginia resided in Philadelphia by 1870. Smith was buried at the Harmony Burial Ground, the burial ground of the African Friends to Harmony at 41st and Chestnut Street in West Philadephia. African Friends, founded in 1826, sought to provide a cemetery for low-income African Americans to be interred with dignity and respect. Several of those buried in the cemetery were associated with the Monument Baptist Church or the Mount Pisgah A.M.E. Church. The property was sold in 1910. Title: [Canning and preserving at demonstration center at Little Wakefield, Germantown]
Description: Shows a class for young National League for Women's Service workers at the Germantown estate "Little Wakefield." In the center, an African American woman, attired in a long-sleeved dress with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows and an apron, stands behind a table over a metal basin as she demonstrates preserving techniques. A group of young women gather around her and watch. In the left, more students stand around a stove and take jars out of a metal basin and pot. The students, many in the similar attire of a white blouse and dark bloomers, take notes, observe, assist in the preserving process, and take a photo with a hand held camera. They stand outside a building on a porch that is covered with a wooden trellis with vines growing on it. A voluntary organization in support of the homefront during World War I, the League used the Little Wakefield estate as a demonstration center. They held classes in home economics and canning and preserving, grew fruits and vegetables, and cultivated bees. Little Wakefield was built by Thomas Rodman Fisher in 1829 on property adjacent to his father's estate, Wakefield, located at 1601 Lindley Avenue. Title: Charles Oakford's model hat store, 158, Chestnut Street Philadelphia. Hats, caps and furs, wholesale and retail
Description: Advertisement showing the ornately furnished interior of a later store, at 624 Chestnut Street, of the the hat establishment established by Oakford in 1827. Fitting tables adorned with lavish free standing light fixtures in front of glass display cases filled with men's hats line the sides of the room. In the foreground, Oakford assists a patron seated at one of the tables on top of which a number of hats lie. Behind the men, a clerk pulls a hat from one of the cases. In the background, in front of another fitting table on which hats sit, a clerk and gentleman patron stand and discuss hats in their hands. A third gentleman patron watches the exchange from across the aisle. An arch labeled "Oakford" is visible to the center of the room that leads to the women's and children's section at the rear of the store. A clerk assists a woman patron seated near a rack of hats and across from a woman and girl as they browse. Large tiles line the floor and the ceiling is plain. Patented March 9, 1858, by Albert Potts, Philadelphia The main object of this improvement is to afford increased postal facilities for the deposit of mailable matter by attaching the boxes to lamp posts at short intervals; the convenience of the light from the lamp is a desideratum the advantages of which are evident. The letter box may be constituted of wrought or cast iron of any design required, and adapted to the shaft of any lamp post; it is warranted to be water, thief, and fire proof. Description: Reissue of the print after a commemorative painting of the hall on fire by Samuel Jones at the request of the publishers with added figures by the prominent Philadelphia genre painter, John Lewis Krimmel. View depicts several volunteer firefighters hosing the flame-engulfed tower of the majestic hall, erected in 1811, purportedly after the design of William Strickland. A large frenzied crowd, including African Americans and well-dressed men and women couples, gather on the street. Spectators push, shove, are knocked down, and watch the fire in horror. Residents flee with their belongings as firefighters blow horns and transport a handpump. Description: Print commemorating the surrender in 1781 of British General Cornwallis at Yorktown depicting the watchman's purported moonlit announcement of the event on October 22nd at the Philadelphia residence of Thomas McKean, the president of Congress. Near the "Geo. She was a substitute teacher. She married William B. Holden in 1903 and was widowed in 1928. She was active in St. Thomas African Episcopal Church and in various women's clubs. She died in 1959.

Designed by Samuel Blodget, Jr., the building was completed in 1797 and housed the first Bank of the United States until the revocation of the bank's charter by Congress in 1811.
