- Shows the busy Pearl River in Canton (i.e. Guangzhou), China. In the center, a large ship, with steam paddles and a smokestack, is beside a wooden dock. In the foreground are sampans, some with people attired in conical hats and holding poles. Lat. 23 degrees N.; Long. 113 degrees E. About one hundred miles from Hongkong on the delta of the Pearl or Canton River is the great city of Canton, the port of outlet for southern China, and one of the largest cities of China. This is one of the most thickly populated parts of the world, and stretching back from the river are miles and miles of fertile fields in which the industrious Chinese raise three crops a year. The city itself is built very closely. Throngs of people crowd the streets, which are incredibly dirty and so narrow that only a strip of sky can be seen overhead. On the river are boats of every description, modern steamers, Chinese junks, sampans, and houseboats. More than a hundred thousand people live in these boats, which are sometimes seventy-five feet long by fifteen feet wide. Such a boat usually has three rooms-a hallroom, a living room, and a sleeping room. These rooms can be broken up easily into additional rooms by the use of screens. The cooking and washing are done in the stern of the boat outside the house proper. Sometimes a family may have a flock of ducks or geese. These are put into the water in the morning and taken on board in the evening. The waters have many fish so the family usually have fish and rice for their food. The houseboats are pushed along by long poles or heavy oars. Sometimes you see little children playing about these houseboats fastened by ropes tied about their waists or with little barrels on their backs which, in case of their falling overboard, will keep them afloat until they are rescued by father or mother. Canton used to be a treaty port. What does that mean? Are all the Chinese seaports now open for trade? Keystone View Company was the leader in promoting stereographs for educational purposes. The company remained in business until 1970.

- Calling card for the Boston Chinese Museum "Writing Master" Tsow Chaoong. Includes a border containing flowers, birds, and cherubs. Chaoong's name also printed in Chinese characters. The Boston Chinese Museum, established following the first official trade agreement between the U.S. and China (Wanghsia Treaty of 1844), operated 1845-1847 in Boston before traveling to Philadelphia. The Museum operated in Philadelphia 1847-1849 and New York 1849-1850 before closing. - Full-length portrait of the conjoined twins Chang and Eng Bunker standing outdoors on grass. Shows the young men barefooted and attired in matching Thai clothing consisting of brown caps, brown tunics, and blue, striped pants. The tunics are open in the front revealing the band of skin and flesh that joined them at the chest. Chang has his right arm around Eng's shoulder, and Eng holds his hand. Eng has his left hand on Chang's waist, and Chang holds his hand. Chang and Eng Bunker were born as conjoined twins in Thailand (formerly known as Siam) to parents of Chinese descent. Chang was positioned on their left, and Eng was on their right. Merchant Robert Hunter and Sea Captain Abel Coffin brought them to the United States in 1829, where they were exhibited as curiosities. The Bunkers left their managers and later toured independently. They purchased an estate in North Carolina. - Full-length portrait of Mai (known as Omai in Britain,) a young indigenous man from Raiatea, who became the second Pacific Islander to visit Europe. Mai is depicted with long, black hair, barefooted, attired in a white robe, and has tattoos on his hands. He holds a feather taumi (gorget) in his right hand and a carved wooden headrest, which may have doubled as a stool, under his left arm. Mai acted as an interpreter to James Cook and joined the crew of the H.M.S. Adventure, traveling to London in 1774. During his two-year stay in England, he became admired by London high society and painted and sketched by a number of artists including Sir Joshua Reynolds, William Hodges, William Parry, and Nathaniel Dance. Singley., Text printed on verso: We here see a group of hula dancers, with leis of fragrant leaves and flowers crowning their heads and cast about their necks, a very pretty custom of the Hawaiians, especially worn on festive occasions. The hula hula has always been a feature of court festivities and also a common entertainment of the islanders, often danced in the lanai or open parlor of the home. The ancient hula was not danced to the accompaniment of musical instruments but rhythmic measures muttered by old men who kept time by striking a gourd; in the modern version of the dance, the lissom dancers, trained from childhood to delight the senses, sway their graceful figures to the music of the flute, guitar and other stringed instuments and the beat of the tom-tom. The white chemise and airy skirt with garlands about head and shoulders and sometimes ankle decorations form the dress of the dusky hula girls. This view was taken in the crater of Punch Bowl Mountain, an extinct volcano., Keystone View Company was founded in 1892 by B.L. Singley, an amateur photographer from Meadville, Pennsylvania. Keystone View Company was the leader in promoting stereographs for educational purposes. In 1912 the company purchased rights to some Underwood & Underwood negatives for use in educational sets, and in 1922 purchased the remaining stock of Underwood materials. The company remained in business until 1970.

They are attired in kimonos and sandals and carry swords in scabbards at their waist. - Trade card promoting the Liebig Company and showing three Japanese boys, depicted in racist caricature, bowing to an oversized container with a label inscribed: "Extractum carnis Liebig manufactured by the Liebig's Extract of Meat Company limited, London..." Shows the boys, attired in yellow pants; colorful tunics of blue, red, or green; and green and red cloth slip-on shoes, kneeling and bowing. The figure in the middle and in the right wear chonmage haircuts with a braid. In the left, a Japanese-style building and archway are visible. Von Liebig, a German-born chemist, who developed a manufacturing process for meat extract in 1840, established the Liebig Extract of Meat Company in 1865. Being the finest meat-flavouring ingredient. None genuine without the fac-simile of Baron Liebig, the inventor’s signature in blue color across the label. Avoid all imitation extracts. Directions. Beef-tea. Efficient tonic in all cases of weakness and digestive disorder. Dissolve a quarter of a tea-spoonful of Liebig Company’s extract in a breakfast cup of boiling hot water, and plenty of salt, this will make a strong and clear beef-tea. You may add according to taste a tea-spoonful of Madeira, Sherry or Port wine or the yolk of a fresh egg, or a trifle of fresh butter or some bread or a boiled potato. A slight addition of Worcestershire sauce is liked by many. This beef-tea acts as a pleasant tonic especially when taken in the morning, and may well be taken several times a day. Soups. A variety of excellent meat and vegetable soups may be made with the aid of the Liebig Company’s extract and any soup will acquire at once strength and fine flavor by a slight addition of extract. Vegetable soup. Potato, pea, rice soup, etc. Boil the vegetables, etc. sufficiently with a little fat, a few bones or some slices of meat, or some fresh butter, add extract and salt according to taste. Sauces. Both strength and flavor imparted by the extract. Night-cap.
