Title: Rev. Alexander Crummell
Description: Three-quarter length portrait of Rev. Crummell, the African American Episcopal priest, educator, missionary, and Black nationalist. Crummell is attired in his clerical robes, over a vest, long sack coat, and trousers. He wears eye glasses, a beard, and holds his right hand up to his chest, holding what is possibly a pipe. Crummell, born in New York and the first African American graduate of the University of Cambridge, lived as a missionary and educator in Liberia between 1853 and 1873. He returned to the U.S. and located to Washington, D.C. where in 1875 he and his congregation founded St. Luke's Episcopal Church, the first independent Black Episcopal church in the city. He spoke before the "Philadelphia Library Company" in St. Thomas's Episcopal Church about "The Natives of Africa, their Habits, Customs, Religion, and Characteristics" on December 10, 1861. Title: The Union Sons, of Johnson Society, of Philadelphia
Description: Ribbon illustrated with a half-length portrait of the Methodist clergyman Revd. Edward Johnson attired in a jacket and neckerchief. His right hand rests atop of a text, possibly a Bible, marked "Revd. Edward Johnson. Born March 1, 1781" on the front cover. Johnson, a sailmaker by trade, was one of a group of parishioners who seceded from Richard Allen's Bethel A.M.E. Title: Rev. C.M. Tanner, Philadelphia, Pa., April 17, 1896
Description: Bust-length portrait of Carlton Miller Tanner (ca. 1869-1933), the African Methodist Episcopal clergyman, missionary, author, and brother of artist Henry Ossawa Tanner. Depicts Tanner, his head turned slightly right, attired in a white clerical collar; dark-colored, button-down vest; and dark-colored jacket with notched lapels. His hair is cropped short and he wears a mustache. Tanner, born in Philadelphia, was a graduate of the Institute of Colored Youth and Divinity School of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. Holding a Doctor of Divinity from Wilberforce University, Payne Theological Seminary, Tanner began work as a pastor about 1893 and presided over the A.M.E. churches Big Bethel Church (Atlanta, Ga.) in the early 1900s and Metropolitan Church A.M.E. (Washington D.C.) between 1917 and 1922. Tanner also established the South African Christian Recorder in 1902 and wrote a "Manual of the A.M.E. Church." Description: Racist trade card promoting stove manufacturer Cribben, Sexton & Co. and depicting a genre scene with African American caricatures originally created for Harper’s Weekly in 1878 by Sol Eytinge that satirized the courtship and marriage of and the start of families by "The Twins." Figures are portrayed with exaggerated features. Shows the sisters getting married a parlor. The twins are attired in white, short-sleeved wedding dresses with ruffles at the bottom and veils. Title: Historical The plan for the organization of the Sunday School Union of the African Methodist Episcopal Church was presented by Rev. C. S. Smith to the Council of Bishops at their annual meeting in Cape May, N. J. August 11, 1882. The bishops approved of the plan, and the Rev. C. S. Smith was appointed corresponding secretary. At the General Conference, which met in Baltimore, MD. May, 1884, the Union was adopted as one of the general departments of the church, and the Rev. C. S. Smith was unanimously elected corresponding secretary of the same. The building now owned and occupied by the Union was purchased February 28, 1888, at a cost of $9,000. The building is situated on the north side of the public square in the city of Nashville, Tenn., and is a handsome five story structure with a solid stone front. The printing department was organized February, 1889, and is known as the publishing house of the A. M. E. Sunday School union. The first book ever issued by a Colored publishing house in the history of the world was issued by the Union, September, 1890, with the title, "Poor Ben." The first Children's Day to be observed in the A. M. E. Church took place on the 4th Sunday in October, 1882

Description: Sixth scene in a racist series of African American caricatures originally created for Harper's Weekly in 1878 by Sol Eytinge that satirized the courtship and marriage of and the start of families by "The Twins." The African American figures are depicted with exaggerated features and mannerisms. Shows the twins getting married in the parlor in which they were introduced to their fiancés (see No. 2 The Introduction). The twins are attired in white wedding dresses and veils and their betrothed in formal suits. An older African American reverend stands in front of them and officiates. Their relatives, including an older woman, attired in a bonnet, and seated in a rocker and holding in her lap a boy, attired in a striped suit with ruffled collar, watch the nuptials from behind them.
