Title: American Sunday School Union Philadelphia [receipt]
Description: Receipt of donation to the American Sunday School Union in Philadelphia. Includes a vignette of a small boy with animals, taken from the text of Isaiah, XI, 6-9. Also includes several lines of text below the image explicating the five objectives of the Union., Not in Wainwright., Issued to George Merriam on December 20, 1851 for receipt of $20 to supply the libraries of destitue schools in the west. Signed Frederick W. Title: [Bird’s eye view looking west on Chestnut from above Sixth Street, Philadelphia]
Description: View predominately shows the businesses (with pre-consolidation addresses) on the 600 block of Chestnut Street. Includes a three-quarter view of William S. Mariten, publisher & bookseller (144, i.e., 608) in addition to full views of the American Sunday School Union tenanted by Howell, Finn & Co. Paper Hangings (146, i.e., 610); the Jones Hotel (148-152, i.e., 616-620); and the William Waln residence, partially obscured by trees, at the corner of 7th and Chestnut streets. A man stands in the doorway of the wallpaper store as nearby a man reads the posted, encased bulletins of the American Sunday School Union. A woman enters the ASSU building that also bears a “Penna. Bible Society” sign. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk and a man greets a woman in front of one of the entrances of the hotel at which carriages and a wagon are parked. On the block and at the distant intersection a man rides horseback and a horse-drawn carriage, wagon, and omnibus travel. Also shows blocks of buildings above Seventh Street as part of the vista. William S. Martien printed as an individual in Philadelphia between 1835 and 1854. American Sunday School Union tenanted 146 Chestnut Street 1827-1853. Description: Plate depicts section of the 600 block of Chestnut Street (136-209 pre-consolidation). South side includes E. Durand & Sons, Druggists (136); Sleeper & Jeanneret, Jewelry (1388-140); Howell & Brothers, Paper Hangings (142); Langdon’s Daguerreotypes and W. S. Martien, Publisher and Bookseller(144); American Sunday School Union (146); and Jones’ Hotel, Bridges & West proprietors (152). North side includes Dr. Jayne’s Philadelphia Arcade, Dr. Davison’s Arcade Baths, and D. Robinson, Bookseller and Stationer (205-209); N.Y. Journal of Fine Arts Agency (203 1/2); Bolivar House (201-203); Chestnut St. Theater (199); and Schenck’s Pulmonic Syrup and Blood’s Despatch (197). Also shows a few of the buildings adorned with flag or statuary. Sleeper & Jeanneret signage (138-140) included on plate as pasted-on details., Advertisements promote twelve of the businesses depicted with signage, as well as John M. Coleman, Importer of Sheffield and German Cutlery, Guns, Pistols, &c (209) and William White, Chemist, S.E. cor. Twelfth and Pine Sts. White's full-page advertisement contains testimonials and several lines of text describing the benefits of “White’s Hair Regenerator, or Amber Gloss” and “White’s Essence of Jamaica Ginger.” Most of the small advertisements include several lines of promotional text and ornamented type.
