Title: [T. Wattson & Sons, biscuit bakery, 129 North Front Street, Philadelphia]
Description: Advertisement showing the busy four-story factory for the bakery at 129 North Front Street, between Chestnut and Walnut Streets. A gentleman, possibly the proprietor Thomas Wattson, stands in one of the open doorways to the bakery as laborers work around him. Near the doorways, workers load kegs onto a horse-drawn "T. Wattson & Sons Biscuit Bakery" wagon and dray. Other men, hoist kegs to upper receiving windows from a group of several lined in front of the factory. In a few of the windows, men at work and stacks of barrels are visible. Laborers hammer shut and move kegs. Also shows "X"-shaped joint bolts on a section of the building under near which a pedestrian walks past. Business established at address in 1846. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront adorned with signage on the 100 block of North Third Street. A patron enters one of the two open entryways at which a straw basket and wine cask are displayed across from a large-cask shaped sign. Sign reads "S. Tobias No. 68 Importer & Dealer in Wines Liquors Cordials and Syrups." At the other entryway, a laborer rolls a cask out the door near a worker entering the cellar. Within the store, the backs of a patron and a clerk are visible in the rear of the store in which shelves of liquor bottles, straw baskets, wine casks, and barrels are displayed on shelves, the floor, and the open display window. Other boxes, bottles, casks, and barrels are visible at the upper floor windows. Barrels and boxes, one marked "S. Tobias" line the sidewalk, near a street lamp in front of the store. Also shows partial views of the adjacent businesses and the signage adorning the storefronts of Charles M. Schott, dry goods (66 N. 3rd St.) and Scattergood & Whitall, druggists' glassware (70 N. 3rd St.). A clerk is visible working at a table through the doorway of Schott, and a pulley and boxes are visible within the open doorway of Scattergood & Whitall. Description: Advertisement looking down the alley way of the brewery, also known as Eagle Brewery, established in 1829. Includes the "Pale Ale Brewery Counting House" (left) and adjoining and adjacent processing buildings. In the foreground, within the doorway of the red brick counting house, a clerk interacts with a drayman. The brewery employee hands the driver a small piece of paper as the deliveryman also holds the reigns of his horse harnessed to a dray loaded with beer barrels. The horse wears blinders. Behind the clerk, a gentleman holding a mug of beer stands with another man in the doorway. In the alley, laborers, some in aprons, transport barrels out off a three-archway storage building, pause near a dray loaded with barrels, and stand by a row of barrels near a doorway of a building opposite the counting house. Title: Christopher Gallagher. Wholesale liquor dealer 806 Lombard St
Description: Advertisement showing the two-story brownstone storefront, adorned with signage, of the liquor dealer who relocated to 806 Lombard Street circa 1875. Barrels, visible through the open central entry, are stacked within the space on the first floor. Architectural ornamentations and etched, arched windows adorn the upper story facade. A man, possibly proprietor Gallagher, stands near one of two other doorways to the establishment across from a laborer prying on one of several barrels lined on the sidewalk. In the street, a boy attends to one of two horses drawing a cart loaded with more barrels. Also shows partial views of adjacent buildings. Title: Harrison Brothers' white lead works & chemical laboratory, Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing a bird's eye view of the chemical works of Harrison Brothers near Fitler and Harrison Streets in Frankford, showing from left to right, the buildings containing "Pyro Acid Works," "Sulphuric Acid Works," "Sugar Lead Works," "White Lead Works," "Alum Works," "Copperas Works," and the company office. The bustling scene includes laborers pushing wheel barrows, putting coal in a furnace, and hoisting barrels using a block and tackle pulley system. Piles of lumber, barrels, and vats cover the ground, and smoke rises from the chimneys of the buildings within the enclosed compound. A man walks along the periphery of the fence in the foreground, between two gates. A loaded wagon enters the left gate, as a dray exits through the right. A dog stands on the left hand side of the fence, facing the pedestrian. Deer and horses graze the fields in the tree-lined, country-like setting behind the chemical works. Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view of the busy courtyard of the "N.H. Graham & Cos. Curing, Packing & Smoking Establishment" on the 2000 block of Filbert Street. Horse-drawn wagons and drays enter and exit the yard between the stable and "Office" under an archway with the name of the business. The wagons are marked with the company name and the drays carry barrels marked with the name of their contents and recipient, including hams, beef, pork, and shoulders and "Miller & Brown, Packers, Cincinatti." The hinds of horses are seen through the stable entry near where barrels of beef are lined and a gentleman departs the office next to which several more barrels are lined. A gentleman passes next to them on the sidewalk. Within the courtyard, men cut and pack meat into barrels near and under sheds. Title: [Fulton House, No. 121 South Second Street, Philadelphia]
Description: Busy view showing the early 1780s former residence of miniature painter and steamboat engineer Robert Fulton when tenanted by a lager beer saloon. Depicts two saloon workers moving barrels across from two men conversing near the entryway of the two-story, wooden building with display window and awning. One worker emerges with a barrel from the cellar in front of the window while the other rolls one of four barrels in his direction and away from a tilted telegraph pole. The pole extends up through the awning and leans into the roof of the adjoining building in the left. “Restaurant” is written on the display window and "Lager Beer Saloon" is written on the awning. A fire insurance marker and signage reading “121 Fulton House” and “ale” also adorn the building. Also shows partial views of adjacent brick buildings, and in the left, a woman attired in a hat, dress, and apron walking on the sidewalk and carrying a ceramic carafe. Building in right, likely a grocery store, is adorned with an awning frame on which a small round sign reading “L” hangs. Building is also adorned with signage that is partially visible and reads "Groc" and "Joh." Fulton lived and worked on South Second Street in the early 1780s. While in Philadelphia, he worked as an apprentice and miniature painter as well as began his experiments with the mechanics of steam power. In 1786 he relocated to Front Street. About 1787 he moved to London and studied painting with American-born artist Benjamin West., Artist and title from manuscript note on oil painting depicting similar scene and given in 1863 to Ferdinand Dreer by James L. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront adorned with signage and displays on the 300 block of North 4th Street. Bottles, small boxes, and broadside advertisements, predominately for French cordials and bitters, fill the display window, and a large model cask with advertising text and stacks of labeled boxes flank the open entrance. Box labels include "Ysla de Cuba," "Assorted Cordials," "Glorias," "Habano." A clerk confers with a patron within the entrance as a laborer enters the cellar to continue to retrieve barrels of "Madeira No.1" and "Port," which line the sidewalk. In the street, a drayman departs with his delivery of a cask of "J. Hennesy [sic] & Co. Cognac." Description: Unlettered proof of advertisement showing a North Third Street block of businesses (37-43) above Market Street. Includes (left to right) Sieger, Lamb & Co., dry goods (43); Brown, Frederick & Kunkel, men's and boys' wear and Irwin, Shultz & Peiper, merchants (41); S. Brock Jr., fancy dry goods and Iungerich & Smith, grocers (39); and Lloyd & Walmsley, trimmings (37). Storefronts are four to five stories and are built of stone. Gentlemen patrons enter and exit, including one descending an interior flight of stairs, most of the establishments. A crate rests outside and boxes are piled near the second-floor windows of Brown, Frederick, & Kunkel. Barrels crowd the first floor of Iungerich & Smith into which a laborer rolls a barrel as two line the sidewalk behind him. Outside of Lloyd & Walmsley, a gentleman inspects a large box and men sit on or address crates in front of Sieger, Lamb & Co. Drays, a wagon, and handcart, attended by their drivers, and loaded with goods, many with faint writing, are parked in front of, or depart, from each building.
