Title: [Robert Morgan of New Haven, washed ashore after a storm in Atlantic City, N.J.]
Description: Depicts people walking along the beach near a three-masted sailing ship, identified as the "Robert Morgan" from New Haven, Connecticut. The ship came ashore at Atlantic City on January 9th, 1884, during the Great Storm, and passed within a few inches of the immense frame work of Applegate's Ocean Pavilion, making a narrow escape from a total wreck and now lies high and dry uninjured on the beach. In 1883 J.R. Applegate purchased 100 feet of beach property in Atlantic City at the foot of Tennessee Avenue, next to his "picture galleries." He built a two tier pier extending 625 feet beyond the boardwalk with an amusement pavillion at the outer end. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 15 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and an outdoor setting. Scenes surrounded by a border designed as tree branches and tools of the design trade, including rulers, scissors and protractors. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. At the center of the panel, two men stand showing their backs as they peer at the countryside from the curtained window. They are flanked by two groups conversing in the parlor. On the left side, a woman attired in a bonnet, long pleated shirtwaist, and white gloves stands in the middle of two men attired in long jackets, vests, and neck ties. The men on the right side wear the same style, while the woman wears a dress with a low cut neckline, gloves, and a small hat. Many of the depicted men have mustaches and or sideburns. Furniture in the parlor includes a high back chair, wing chair and an ottoman. Lower panel shows a beach scene and a hunting scene. Dividing the two are a man and a woman mounted on horses. A man sits on the beach in the lower left corner of the frame. The Malta was originally built as the steamer Queen of the South in 1852, then renamed Malta and converted to a sailing ship in 1871. Enroute from Antwerp to New York with empty petroleum barrels, the Malta ran aground during a gale on November 24, 1885.
