Title: New Ethiopian Serenaders now performing at Washington The Black Republican Opera Troop, now occupying the White House, respectfully inform the public that they have, at great expense to the nation, engaged the celebrated clown and acrobat, Abe Linkum, This artiste, so famous for his fete (a joke) between Harrisburg and Washington in March, is the source of much interest, though not a man of much principle. Title: Uncle Sam protecting his property against the encroachments of his cousin John
Description: Print depicting Uncle Sam grabbing John Bull by the neck showing upset over intervention in the Civil War. Uncle Sam, depicted as a Union soldier closely resembling Abraham Lincoln, holds a sword labeled, "Principle of Non-Enterference." He pulls John Bull by the back of his neck who is poaching plants from a garden. John Bull is attired in a military uniform and cannons on his legs labeled, "Armstrong's Patent," referring to English manufactured weapons used by the Confederates. Standing on a fence post in the left is a cock with the face of Napoleon III, who watches the scene. In the background is an oversized scarecrow with a sign that reads, "All persons tresspassing[sic] these premisses, will be punished according to Law." The corpses of the dead bodies of Confederate general P.G.T. Beauregard and Confederate president Jefferson Davis hang from nooses from the scarecrow's arms. Title: The battle of Bull's Run
Description: Pro-Confederate cartoon containing eighteen numbered figures and scenes to satirize the mayhem at the Battle of Bull Run in July 1861. Figures include: (1) Beauregard's (2) Jefferson Davis's and (3) Johnston's Confederate Headquarters; (4) Maryland Elzy's Battiry [sic]; (5) Union General Irvin McDowell; (6) Union General Daniel Tyler; (7) the Bull's Run; (8) New York Fire Zouaves; (9) New York 12th Regiment; (10) Union Sherman's Battiry [sic]; (11) Congressman Alfred Ely; (12) barricade for Members of Congress; (13) civilian spectators Lovejoy & Co. and (14) ladies as sputatiers; (15) Biddle, Brown & Co., members of Congress; (16) Union Blenker's Brigade; (17) Senator Wilson; (18) and the U.S. Dragoon. Depicts in the foreground: the Zouaves driving a bull that holds the American flag in its tail and is labeled, "Expenses for 100 Mill., Bad Business, Property, but no Security" in front of the retreating General Tyler and the New York regiment. The troops flee on the road to Washington past Union soldiers who lay dying and lamenting their foolishness near a "fat left-tenant" stating "God Save the Union" and Senator Wilson. In the background, Confederate troops march over a hill and mock the Union's abolitionist stance and lack of ammunition; Sherman's Battiry [sic] loads a cannon; Congressmen seek shelter behind a barricade of "U.S." wagons; civilian spectators Brown & Company flee by carriage as they deny aid to a white man who hollers, "you are more unmerciful then the overseer"; Congressman Ely, captured by the Confederates, offers a monetary bribe in exchange for his "liberty"; and the Union's Blenker's Brigade march into the battle in front of their retreating fellow soldiers General Irvin McDowell and the "U.S. Dragoon" who gallop "Home, Sweet, Home."
