Mechancis Hall is in the center foreground while Trinity Church is visible in the background, still in construction. The Hamilton Hotel, built 1852-1861, was the first hotel in Bermuda. Opened in 1861, the hotel went through numerous additions and alterations to increase in size. It was razed by fire in 1955. Mechanics Hall was the home of the Bermuda Mechanics’ Beneficial Association, a Masonic lodge established in 1849. Until the building of the Colonial Opera House in 1908, the upper auditorium of the Hall served as the main concert and lecture hall for the city. The Association became a Friendly Society in 1888. Friendly societies, started in the 1830s, were formed by and for the black community to provide support through education, employment, and medical care. The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, an Anglican church, was originally designed by James Cranston in 1845 and completed in 1869. A fire razed the building in 1884.
