Title: Joe Michl's fifty little orphans
Description: Small display card depicting a montage of children's and baby's faces, heads, and busts, including one African American child. Two children, prominently shown in the foreground, hold hands, and a cigar. Some children wear bonnets and ribbons on their heads. A few children wear outfits with lace collars and shoulder straps with bows. Most of the "little orphans" smile, while others cry and frown. Michel established his cigar business as a partnership in Decatur in 1858. He predominantly operated as a sole proprietor from 1863 to 1903. Description: Trade cards depicting specimens for cigar box labels and trimmings of George S. Harris & Sons. Shows No. 2151 "City cousin," No. 2126 "Mirth and beauty," and No. 2155 "First mate.""City cousin," depicts a young woman reclining against a bale of hay in a field. Above this scene are toiletries, perfumes, and a book of "Happy hour poems" wrapped in a ribbon. "Mirth and beauty" depicts a waist-length portrait of a young girl wearing a large plumed hat. Title: [Manufacturing cigars for the poodles. A sketch from the Havannah.]
Description: Print depicting West Indian Black men cigarmakers, portrayed in racist caricature, and their English customers criticizing the use of tobacco and the corrupt nature of enslaved labor. The cigarmakers, attired in sarongs or loinclothes and some with caps, speak in the vernacular, "You mak'a nice ting for Massa Poodle to suck." They soak tobacco, which is dripping wet and giving off a stench, in a large barrel labeled "hospital tub," and in their own urine and vomit to produce "high flavored" cigars. In the left, a Black man vomits into a basin filled with tobacco leaves and says, "What a tink! de smell mak'a me sick." In the right, a man squats and urinates into another basin filled with tobacco.
