Title: Entrance to Brandywine Bridge, Wilmington, [DE]
Description: Glass negative showing the entrance to Brandywine Bridge, a covered bridge. Electiral wires are strung above the bridge and a man stands in the entryway. A sign hangs over this bridge reading "[...] Builders, 1839. Keep to the right as the law directs, Walk your horses over the bridge, Under the penalty of 5 dollars, Built for New Castle County Building Committee." The Brandywine Bridge refers to State Bridge #575 or the North Market Street Bridge, originally a chain suspension bridge as early as 1762. After various repairs and updates, the bridge washed away in 1822 and was rebuilt into a double-span timber bridge, running 145 feet long and 28 feet wide. This new structure washed away in an 1839 flood and was replaced by bridge builder Lewis Wernwag. Description: Advertisement containing a view of the busy foundry in a trompe l'oeil frame. Shows a gentleman, possibly the proprietor, leaving the door of the office connected to the large workshop in which laborers toil on machine parts. A boy carrying a small part walks toward the gentleman. He passes two men talking at the corner of the small office building near the side of the workshop lined by factory debris. On the sidewalk, laborers finish a large gear propped up on a platform. The men are surrounded by machine parts that lie on the ground and line the outside of another factory building. Nearby, two workers with crowbars and a piece of cylinder await a horse-drawn cart being backed up to the curb by a driver. Also shows a driver leading a horse and ox-drawn wagon hauling a large steam pipe in the street, a locomotive passing between the rear of the factory and fenced pastureland, and a steamboat docked near a hoist on the riverbank in the background. Description: Documentary view taken by Delaware news photographer A.N. Sanborn showing African American men voters outside of Buck's Chemical Co., a Wilmington, Delaware polling place. Depicts the men standing on the edge of the sidewalk, some conversing, one holding papers in his hand, in front of the brick building of the chemical company adorned in signage reading "Incorporated 1900. Bucks Chemical Co., 1201 & 1203 French St. J.C. Buck[? ], Pres. Wm C. [?], Secy. & Treas. Other men stand near the building by the sign and an entryway with the frame marked "Laundry." Behind them, in the background, the Black church, the Union American Methodist Episcopal Church, is visible. In 1901, the Delaware State General Assembly took actions to dismantle laws that impeded voting by the Black community, as well as had finally symbolically ratified the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. The November 1907 local option election ballot was on the question of whether state licenses should be granted to outlets to serve alcohol.
