Title: Birds-eye view of Andersonville Prison from the south-east
Description: Birds-eye view of Andersonville Prison, a Confederate prisoner-of-war-camp in Georgia, with the vast prison area surrounded by stockade fences. In the center are numerous prisoners and their hand-made housing, consisting of various fabrics and mounds of dirt. Guard towers surround the fence and guards, on foot, horseback, and in horse-drawn carts patrol. In the right, men, many of whom use canes or crutches and have amputated legs sit, lie down, or walk in a separate fenced area that has tents. Two cannon emplacements with soldiers are visible in the foreground. Several buildings and a train traveling down the railroad tracks are visible in the background. The prison operated from February 1864 until April 1865. Description: Full-length portrait of the conjoined twins Chang and Eng Bunker standing outdoors on grass. Shows the young men barefooted and attired in matching Thai clothing consisting of brown caps, brown tunics, and blue, striped pants. The tunics are open in the front revealing the band of skin and flesh that joined them at the chest. Chang has his right arm around Eng's shoulder, and Eng holds his hand. Eng has his left hand on Chang's waist, and Chang holds his hand. Chang and Eng Bunker were born as conjoined twins in Thailand (formerly known as Siam) to parents of Chinese descent. Chang was positioned on their left, and Eng was on their right. Merchant Robert Hunter and Sea Captain Abel Coffin brought them to the United States in 1829, where they were exhibited as curiosities. The Bunkers left their managers and later toured independently. They purchased an estate in North Carolina. Title: Primrose The celebrated piebald boy, a native of the West Indies; publicly [sic] shewn in London 1789
Description: Full-length portrait of John Richardson Primrose Bobey, a young Black man with the pigmentation disorder vitiligo, born enslaved in Jamaica, and inspected and exhibited as a specimen of science throughout England. Shows the young man standing on a shoreline. He stands with palm trees in the distance. He is dressed in a loincloth knotted on his left hip and adorned with tassels. White patches are visible on his legs, torso, and down the center of his head. In his right hand, he holds up a captioned portrait broadside of himself as a boy and points to it with his left hand bent at the elbow and from in front of his waist. The broadside depicts the very young Bobey with primarily white skin above text reading "A Child born at Gros Islet, in the Island of St. Lucia, of Black Parents, Taken from a model of the infant colored from nature," and at the museum of T. Description: Half-length portrait of the African American bishop, seated, and holding a book, possibly the Bible, in front of a curtain. He looks slightly to the left and points to an open page of the book with his right hand and clasps the upper edge of the other side of the book with his left hand. Allen is attired in a collared shirt, a vest, and a jacket. Allen was the first African American bishop as well as founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He was born in Philadelphia and was enslaved by Benjamin Chew. He worked as a wood-cutter during his ordination. A full-length portrait of the white Quaker abolitionist and little person Benjamin Lay is on the verso. Lay is attired in a tricorn hat, a long shirt and jacket, britches, and boots. Title: An heir to the throne, or the next Republican candidate
Description: Racist cartoon using African American side-show performer William Henry Johnson to lampoon the extent to which the Republican party supported the rights of African Americans as a part of their Election Platform of 1860. In the left, depicts editor of the Tribune, Horace Greeley, who says, "Gentlemen, allow me to introduce to you, this illustrious individual in whom you will find combined, all the graces, and virtues of Black Republicanism, and whom we propose to run as our next Candidate for the Presidency." In the center, Johnson, depicted with a bald and tapered head and attired in a long-sleeved shirt, shorts, and black shoes, leans on the spear that he holds in both hands and asks in the vernacular, "What, can dey be?" In the right, candidate Abraham Lincoln leans on a rail and says, "How fortunate! that this intellectual and noble creature should have been discovered just at this time, to prove to the world the superiority of the Colored over the Anglo Saxon race, he will be a worthy successor to carry out the policy which I shall inaugurate." In the background is a poster that reads, "Barnum’s What is it. Now exhibiting." William Henry Johnson was born in Liberty Corners, New Jersey to William and Mahalia Johnson, who were formerly enslaved. As Johnson’s head was smaller and sloped, agents from van Emburgh's Circus in New Jersey exhibited him with a story that he was caught in Africa and was a "missing link." P.T. Description: Print commemorating the surrender in 1781 of British General Cornwallis at Yorktown depicting the watchman's purported moonlit announcement of the event on October 22nd at the Philadelphia residence of Thomas McKean, the president of Congress. Near the "Geo. Washington" tavern, the white watchman, one hand raised, a lantern in the other, his mouth open and with a few teeth missing, cries the news to the crowd of men, women, and children surrounding him and McKean. McKean, wearing a silken robe, chin in hand listens. His face portrayed with a look of contemplation. The crowd, many in nightclothes hold candlesticks, pray, cheer, and listen solemnly. Description: Historic scene from the close of the American Revolution depicting General Washington, carrying his hat in his right hand and holding the reins in his left hand, on horseback and triumphantly parading his troops through a crowded New York City street on November 25, 1783. Following him closely on horseback are his principal officers: Governor George Clinton, General Frederick William Augustus, Baron von Steuben, General Thaddeus Kosciusko, General Gilbert Motier De La Fayette, Alexander Hamilton, General Henry Knox, General Israel Putnam, General Nathaniel Greene, and General Horatio Gates.
