Description: Series of illustrated trade cards entitled, "Sweepe withe ye olde yeere all that's bad awaie, and a newe lyfe begynne on Newe Yeere's Day," "Ye Newe Yeere cometh, so I pray of you putte offe ye olde manne & putte on ye newe," and "If Newe Yeere bring thee aught lyke this let's hope thou may'st deserve thy blisse". Title: Lippincott & Co. south west corner of Fourth & Market St Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the red, two-bay, six-story building tenanted by Barclay and Isaac Lippincott's clothing store at the southwest corner of Fourth and Market Streets, marked with pre-consolidation addressed buildings. An advertisement painted in white on the east side of the building reads, "Lippincotts one price clothing warehouse cheap for cash." The same phrase is displayed on the front facade, along with the address, "4th & Market Sts., 130" A large flag reading, "Clothing Lippincott & Co.," flies at the top of the building. Two men stand near a display of shirts, pants, vests, and other articles of clothing under the corner awning. Patrons speak with sales clerks who stand behind counters, in front of shelves that extend to the ceiling. The store's wares cover the shop windows. A man walks with a woman holding a parasol near boxes piled outside of the adjacent, four-story property occupied by Lippincott's Clothing Warehouse (132 Market Street, ie. 402 Market Street). Next to the clothing warehouse, framed engravings are displayed in the partially visible shop window of Thomas, importer of engravings (404 Market Street). A large framed print is prominently advertised on the outside of the shop. A person stands in the front doorway of the building immediately south of Lippincott & Co. on Fourth Street. A woman in a red dress rides a white horse along Market Street, and two dogs stand together in the middle of the street in the foreground., The clothing store operated at this address as Lippincott, Taylor & Co., until 1851 when it became Lippincott & Co. under the ownership of Barclay and Isaac Lippincott. Description: Catalog, including section “New Electros of Vegetables for 1889,” of electrotype specimens for the premier Philadelphia horticultural engraver and lithographer containing images of flowers, plants, fruits, and vegetables. Varieties of flowers, plants, fruits, and vegetables represented include begonias, carnations, chrysanthemums, ferns, pansies, poppies, roses, verbena, corn, melons, lettuces, onions, peppers, pumpkins, squashes, and tomatoes. Illustrations include specimen numbers and prices (ranging from $.50-$10), and most include titles. Images predominantly depict sentimental and genre views of women, children, and animals containing or bordered by flowers; baskets of fruit or flowers; wilderness scenes; insects; single letters and words embellished with floral details; potted plants and flowers; flower bushes; residential views containing flowers; flower and vegetable vignettes; bean pods; single, fields, patches, and bushels of fruits and vegetables; and gardening tools and agricultural implements and equipment., Other specimens depict reproductions of lithographs; female representations of months of the year; “Bulbs grown in Bamboo rod”; a montage, including a crate with packages of bulbs; "Craig’s New Chrysanthemum, Mrs. A. After fire destroyed its building in 1820, the Association of the Proprietors of the New Theatre sold shares in the property and hired William Strickland to design a new building. Constructed at the same location in only eight months, the imposing marble structure included the statues of Comedy and Tragedy sculpted by William Rush, which survived the fire. To celebrate its opening, the managers held a contest for the best opening night address. Prize winner Charles Sprague’s verses were so well-received that his address was read a second night. The theater is shown here in 1855, shortly before being demolished.

Description: View of the south side of the 700 block of Chestnut Street looking west toward Eighth Street, with the multi-storied office building of the the Philadelphia Press newspaper established in 1857 by John W. Forney in the foreground. Signs on the Seventh Street side of the building include "J. Restein & Sons plain & fancy paper coloring & card printing establishment," "Engraver on wood," and "Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company." A sign for Wheeler & Wilson's sewing machines at 704 Chestnut is also visible, but signage beyond this shop is illegible. One man stands at the southwest corner in front of the Press building reading a broadside, while another crosses the street at the northeast corner. Gas street lamps are spaced at intervals along the block, with the largest situated in front of the Press Building. Two horse-drawn carriages travel in the street in the distance.
