Three-quarter length portrait of five-year old child emancipated from enslavement, Fannie Virginia Casseopia Lawrence, with her adoptive mother Catherine S. Lawrence. Freed in Virginia by Lawrence, a military nurse, Fannie was publicized as the "redeemed slave child" baptized by Henry Ward Beecher at Plymouth Church in Brooklyn in May 1863.
