Description: Advertisement showing a southwest view of the three-story storefront, adorned with signage, on the 200 block of Walnut Street. In front of the store, a female patron reaches into a sack - one of several sacks, crates, and canisters displayed on a platform near the open doorway. Within the store, a couple stands near one of two rows of shelves of merchandise furnishing the establishment. On the second floor, large, open panel doors expose the room lined with hay. A barrel and crates, and boxes of tea and sacks stacked in the rear of the floor are visible. Several brooms are stored in front of the third floor windows. Description: Advertisement showing the storefront of the grocery and tea shop with unusually tall display windows on the 1200 block of Chestnut Street. The side of the building is adorned with signage reading "Flour Fish & Salt Hams Beef & Tongues Choice Family Groceries J.C. Jenkins & Co., displays of tongue and ham, signs for "Mats," and markers for Twelfth Street. A mannequin of a Chinese laborer carrying boxes of tea with a bamboo pole exhibited on a display of tea crates in addition to other displays of boxes and canisters of fancy soaps and candles line the interior and exterior of the front windows. Within the store, a clerk assists a woman and a boy at the counter. On the sidewalk, a gentleman stops in front of the building, near a box of tea at the edge of the sidewalk, to gaze at the Chinese figure, and a man, with a sack, walks past the corner. Description: Unlettered proof of advertisement showing a North Third Street block of businesses (37-43) above Market Street. Includes (left to right) Sieger, Lamb & Co., dry goods (43); Brown, Frederick & Kunkel, men's and boys' wear and Irwin, Shultz & Peiper, merchants (41); S. Brock Jr., fancy dry goods and Iungerich & Smith, grocers (39); and Lloyd & Walmsley, trimmings (37). Storefronts are four to five stories and are built of stone. Gentlemen patrons enter and exit, including one descending an interior flight of stairs, most of the establishments. A crate rests outside and boxes are piled near the second-floor windows of Brown, Frederick, & Kunkel. Barrels crowd the first floor of Iungerich & Smith into which a laborer rolls a barrel as two line the sidewalk behind him. Title: View of the United States Hose house & apparatus, Philadelphia To the Independent Fire Co. of Baltimore & the Franklin Fire Co. of Washington, this print is respectfully dedicated, (as a slight token of appreciation of their generous hospitality) by the United States Hose Co. of Philadelphia
Description: Keepsake print containing a rollicking view of members of the volunteer hose company racing their hose carriage around the corner from their firehouse at Tamany (i.e., Buttonwood) Street below York Avenue. Firefighters, most in gear, pull the carriage, run from behind the vehicle, and suit up in the entry to their firehouse. The house contains an iron-work verandah, and a tower from which a volunteer directs the company. Adjacent to the station house at the corner stands "Tamany Hall," an oyster house adorned in signage, including the name of proprietor "Jas. Griffiths" and street signs. The proprietor stands at his doorway, a server watches from outside, and a patron rushes out a rear entry. At the opposite corner, the grocery store of "Tunis O. Bancroft" stands. A female clerk stands in the doorway and merchandise displays, including brooms and buckets, line the storefront. The store owner, attired in an apron and top hat, stands out front, under an awning, and watches the commotion. Another hose carriage, ornately decorated, rests nearby in the street. A small toolbox, bucket, and sponge lie in the street next to the apparatus. View also shows the neighboring residential buildings on the block and around the corner. United States Hose Company was instituted on July 4, 1826 and incorporated on March 13, 1833. Baltimore held a Fireman's Celebration in cooperation with Washington D.C. in November 1851 that was attended by the United States Hose Company.
