Title: The Great Central Fair, Philadelphia 1864
Description: Views from the the Great Central or Sanitary Fair of June 1864 that displayed art, craft, and historical exhibits to benefit the soldier relief organization, the U.S. Sanitary Commission. Shows Union Avenue, the main thoroughfare; the Horticultural Department; and the Art Gallery. Views include exhibition displays, framed paintings on gallery walls, viewing benches, tropical greenery, patriotic decorations, and guards., Contains three stereographic prints on yellow mounts with square corners, including two accompanied by photographer's labels and one with a distributor's stamp. Title: Lincoln Monument, Phila. Park
Description: View showing the Lincoln Monument at the entrance (Kelly and Lemon Hill Drives) of Fairmount Park surrounded by men who stand and look at the viewer, including white men spectators and three men guards, one possibly African American, attired in caps with insignia pinned to their lapels, and holding swords. In the right, two white men sit within a horse-drawn carriage. Sculpted by Randolph Rogers, Abraham Lincoln is depicted seated with a quill in his hand after just signing the Emancipation Proclamation. The statue rests upon a pedestal adorned with sculpted garland, bronze eagles, and the City of Philadelphia's Coat of Arms. The granite base is adorned with four panels inscribed with a dedication to and quotes from Lincoln of which two are visible. Unveiled in September 1871, the monument was commissioned by the Lincoln Monument Association, one of the first such associations formed in the country to raise funds for a city monument in memory of Lincoln. Title: Views of Independence Hall, 520 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia
Description: Views predominately showing exteriors of the front and rear of the State House built 1732-1748 after the designs of Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley. Also shows the old City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans, Jr. adorned with lettering reading "Mayors Office" (500 Chestnut); views of Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut), including the building adorned with broadsides; partial views of the construction site for and the completed Public Ledger Building (built 1866-1867, 600-606 Chestnut), the rear gate entrance to Independence Square and the square; pedestrian traffic; horse-drawn wagons; and a guard. Also includes a view of a queue of people in mourning clothes at the rear of the hall, probably during the funeral of President Lincoln and an interior view showing the Assembly Room when utilized as an exhibit gallery.
