- Ribbon for the funeral ceremonies of Lafayette
- Description
- White silk satin ribbon. At the top of the ribbon is an American eagle with a shield of the republic on its breast which is sewn to a black five-pointed star in folded gauze. Letterpress and wood engraving of a funerary urn and weeping willow tree, on a base with a portrait of Lafayette. The base is flanked by French and American flags. Atop of the tree is an eagle that holds in its beak a banderole that reads, “a grateful nation’s mournful tribute.” Written at the bottom, “Gen. Gilbert Mottier Lafayette, born at Auvergne, Sept. 6th 1757. Died May 20th, 1834, aged 76 years 8 months, and 14 days, Funeral Obsequies performed to his memory, July 21, 1834, Philadelphia.”, Various fire companies, trade associations, and civic societies marched in the parade., Gift of Davida Deutsch, 2011.

- Exterior view of the Delaware County residence used as a headquarters by the French general Marquis De La Fayette before the American Revolutionary battle in September 1777. Several trees line the property. - Lafayette's headquarters, West Chester County
- Description
- Drawing depicting the Joseph Gilpin House, occupied by the Marquis de Lafayette during the Battle of Brandywine in 1777. Shows a pathway leading up to front facade of the two-story house with a front porch. In the right is an adjacent wing with a stone wall around it. Also visible are an out building and a wooden fence. The original portion of the house was constructed circa 1695. Wings were added to the north of the original frame house in 1745 and to the west in 1782. Quaker farmer Gideon Gilpin occupied the house when it was used by Lafayette. - Lock of white hair on a black background. Oval glass covered opening. The hair was taken by Martin Pierie, Washington's barber, in 1781., Note pasted to back reads: "Description of frame: 1. Oval from Washington's mansion - Mt. Vernon; 2. Part of a chestnut tree planted by Washington which is the molding; 3. Beed around frame from Independence Hall, Philadelphia; 4. The ring from Carpenter's Hall; 5. Upper right star Tree Lafayette planted; 6. Upper left star, Gen'l Anthony Wayne house; 7. Lower right star, Frigate Constitution; 8. Lower left star, Frigate Alliance; 9. Back from pew Washington worshipped in at Christ Church. I believe the above to be correct and true. - Masonic memorial
- Description
- Commemorative, fictionalized group portrait print depicting “seventy-seven Masonic Brethren, Signers of the Declaration of American Independence and other Distinguished Members of the “Masonic Fraternity” in the Assembly Room of Independence Hall. Shows three rows of Brethren (“Distinguished Dead” and “immortal”) within the paneled wall room of the historic site being used as an exhibit gallery. At the center of the first row stands “Father of his Country” George Washington, his left hand on his hip, and wearing a masonic apron adorned with Masonic symbols. Nearest him to the left, also in masonic, but undecorated, aprons, stand Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Other figures in undecorated aprons in the front row include (left to right) James Buchanan; Marquise de Lafayette; Bishop William White; Andrew Jackson; and Henry Clay. Some of the men hold hats or scrolls, while others hold their hands together, or cross their arms. Other figures in the further rows include Stephen Girard, Stephen A. Douglas, and John C. Breckenridge. In the background, framed artwork, predominately from the Charles Willson Peale portrait collection; Henry Inman's portrait painting of William Penn (left); Thomas Sully's portrait painting of Lafayette (right) line the walls. Background also includes in the far right, the Liberty Bell upon which a stuffed bald eagle sits (installed 1852) and, in the center, a bronze eagle elevated above the partially visible wood statue of George Washington (carved 1815 by William Rush, installed 1824)., Title from from promotional pamphlet held in collections [Am 1860 Pheni 54390.O.13]. - Centennial Westward the course of empire takes its way
- Description
- Print commemorating the 100th anniversary of the nation, celebrated at the Centennial Exhibition through an international exhibition of industry, agriculture, and art in Philadelphia. Contains the text of the Declaration of Independence and the Proclamation Emancipation bordered by several historical and allegorical vignettes, scenes, and views that symbolize the social, political, and technological progress of the country. Oval frames surround the texts, which encircle bust-length portraits of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The frames are adorned with banners labeled with the names of the original 13 colonies and the 38 states recognized as of 1876. Two bird's eye views showing the development of a cityscape, possibly New York City, from 1776 to 1876 are visible between the framed texts. Other images show the "Battle of Bunker Hill"; "Battle of Gettysburg"; "Surrender of Cornwallis"; "Columbus - 1492"; colonists landing at "Plymouth Rock"; "[Lafayette's] Visit to U.S. in 1824"; "A Home of 1776" with a white woman at a loom; "Franklin's Printing Press"; "Hoe's Ten Cylinder Press"; "A Home of 1876" with a white woman at a sewing machine; the marine battles of the "Constitution and Guerriere" and "Merrimac and Monitor"; Independence Hall, and the U.S. Capitol., Uncaptioned vignettes show an auction of enslaved African American people, African American children in a classroom, farmers harvesting a field by hand, a farmer harvesting a field with a horse-drawn reaper, a man traveling by horseback, a speeding train, a hand-pump fire engine of "1776" and a steam engine of "1876." - Reproduction of commemorative print purchased by subscription after the painting exhibited in America by French-born painter, John Francis Renault. Depicts an historically inaccurate, allegorical scene of the decisive surrender at the close of the American Revolution. Shows Lord Cornwallis offering his sword to the Duke de Lauzun who defers the weapon to General Washington. Image includes: the American, French, and British military officers convening on a knoll near a neoclassical two-column monument with an inscribed urn guarded by female muses and a child holding the U.S. Constitution; Washington's African American valet and horse; and an allegorical scene of a goddess, portrayed as a white woman, firing lightning bolts upon an overturned Roman chariot. Identified officers depicted are: Lauzun, General Knox, General Nelson, General Lafayette, Washington, Major General Lincoln, Count Jean Baptiste de Rochambeau, Colonel Hamilton, Cornwallis, Lt. - Description
- Series I, Politics (1840-1880) holds campaign, commemorative, and mourning ribbons for a variety of politicians. Series II, Celebrations, Organizations, and People (1832-1862) is arranged in those three subseries, and holds printed and woven commemorative ribbons printed to be worn in honor of events, societies, and men. Series III, Civil War and Patriotic Themes (1860-1878) has a wider variety of formats and material, and includes dress fabrics printed with patriotic legends and iconography. Series IV, Relics (1861-1862), holds fabric fragments which purport to have historic significance: pieces of the Secession flag torn down by Col. E. E. Ellsworth at the start of the war; a fragment from a banner flown by a ship from Georgia that entered Boston Harbor in April 1861; and a small piece of a flag from the Battle of Fort Donelson, Tennessee. Series V, Great Central Fair (1864) contains a variety of ribbons and textile badges from Philadelphia's Sanitary Fair. They were worn by committee members who participated in planning the fair and staffing its exhibition booths., Some parts of this collection were previously assigned accession numbers 1322.F, 5741.F, 5750.F, 5755.F, 5786.F, 5792.F, 5793.F, 5795.F, P.2003.38 (Doret)., John A. McAllister was an antiquarian collector living in Philadelphia.
