- Shows the steam locomotive "Washington" built by the company started by William Norris and Col. Stephen H. Long in 1836. Locomotive contains a nameplate. Also includes a scale printed below the image. In July 1836, the "George Washington" hauled a load of 19,200 pounds at 15 miles per hour up the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad's inclined Belmont Plane. It was the first locomotive to ascend a hill on its own power. In 1837, the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railway assumed ownership of the machine. Norris & Company, the internationally recognized premier steam locomotive manufactory of the 1830s-1860, produced several innovative designs, including the "Washington," a leading truck; and the first ten-wheel locomotive., Not in Wainwright., Published in Locomotive steam engine of William Norris, Philadelphia. - Description
- View showing a primitive steam engine locomotive pulling stagecoach-like railroad cars past the "Philadelphia Germantown & Norristown Railway Depot" at the southwest corner of Ninth and Green streets. A driver attired in a top-hat stands and operates the engine from a chariot like platform attached to the locomotive built by Matthias Baldwin. Several passengers occupy the lead coach and partially visible second one. Conductors sit in the cabs of the cars. The Philadelphia Germantown & Norristown Railway, incorporated in 1831, began service to Germantown in 1832 and to Norristown in 1834. - Sheet music cover containing a genre scene, circa the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, showing bicyclists on East River Drive, i.e. Kelly Drive in East Fairmount Park. In the foreground, a man in checkered coat, striped bicycle pants, and a "Deerstalker" cap rides a "High Wheeler" in front of an arch of the New York Connecting Railway Bridge (built 1866-1867) spanning the Schuylkill River. Behind him, two other bicyclists follow and pass a startled horse pulling a buggy being approached by a park guard from across the road. A locomotive travels over the bridge. In the background, the Promontory Rock Tunnel (bored in 1871), the Girard Avenue Bridge (built 1872-1874), and the Centennial Exhibition observation tower, "Iron Tower," on George's Hill in West Fairmount Park are visible. Scullers row near a steamboat under the distantly-seen bridge on which a locomotive crosses. Also shows horse-drawn carriages traveling on the drive and on the Girard Avenue Bridge.
