The Irish Dragoons, the 117th Regiment, 13th Cavalry of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, under the command of Col. James A. Gallagher, was organized in Sept. 1861, originally to be attached to Gen. Meagher's Irish Brigade forming in New York City; it was mustered out July 14, 1865; James A. Gallagher was discharged Oct. 6, 1863. Cf. S.P. Bates.
