The square pillar surmounted by an urn (left) is for General Hugh Mercer, a physician, and brigadier general in the Continental Army. The column and urn on the right is for William Young Birch, a native of Manchester, England, who moved to the states in 1793 and established himself as a bookseller and stationer in Philadelphia.
