- Letterhead containing illustration composed of ornate type, cloud and starburst imagery, floral details, and the Hofert monogram, probably a trademark., Completed in manuscript to 'Dear Hortense" from Clayton M. Nagle, 936, 6 Ave, S.E. Cor. 53d St., N.Y. Correspondence refers to his pardoning her delay in responding to his letter due to illness, summer plans of their acquaintances, his clerking for experience in the drug business, and the expense of New York, including "$8 for week board and it is not as first class as it should be.", Cataloging funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (PW-506-19-10), 2010-2012., Gift of William H. Obverse reads: 130 Rich W. Cogdell was admitted a member of the So. Ca. Society, May 2nd 1826. Reverse depicts a hands holding three leaves, reads: Centenl. Celebrn. of So. Ca. Society Mar. 28, 1857. Posteritate. 891 f. Mourning pendant with leather case. Back of pendant reads: John Stevens died June 1, 1772 Aged 52. Mary Stevens died August 1st, 1782, Aged 56. Front has monument with two urns, reads “Rest in Peace” surrounded by trees. Surrounded by a blue border with gold flowers. 891 g. Cameo with neoclassical scene of two men and a women reaching to grab a horse, while a child with a dog sits at the bottom right corner. Italian. 891 h. Button with circular pattern, inscribed W to J. 891 i Clear-cut glass, 3-sided wax seal attached to an ornate (brass?) handle. Depicts: dove with olive branch, man with beard and helmet (Roman?), third side blank. 891 j. Small glass mosaic of beetle. Borders from outside to interior are dark blue, turquoise blue, red. Beetle is composed of gold, red, and green with a white background., Gift of Cordelia Hinkson Brown, Beverly Brown-Ruggia, and family in honor of Phil Lapsansky, 2012., Middle-class African American family active in the Philadelphia African American political, social, educational, and cultural community from the 1850s to the 20th century. The family was involved in several prominent local African American institutions, including the St. Thomas P.E. Church, Church of the Crucifixion, Central Presbyterian Church, the Colored Institute of Youth, and the Citizens Republican Club.

- Description
- Includes three letterheads and one billhead. Letterheads illustrated with ornamental and pictorial details, the trademark of the firm, and a vignette exterior view of the manufactory. Details include banners, sprigs of flowers, clouds, and art nouveau iconography. Trademark depicted as a mortar and pestle marked with the monogram WAS and "Semper Idem." Exterior view shows the multi-story, block long factory building in front of which cars and a train travels. Two of the prints also contain an ornament comprised of a frame resembling a belt surrounding the monogram SDC and marked "Established 1853.", Title supplied by cataloger., Printers include Corlies, Macy, & Co. Incp'd, New York; Gast, St. Louis; and Brown-Morrison Co., Lynchburg, Va., P.2011.46.233 and P.2011.46.234 completed in type on June 18th, 1896 and May 20, 1898 to Polk Miller Drug Co., Richmond, Va. from W. A. Strother, President about the exchange of Sarsparilla and Poultry Feed between the firms and the associated corroborative business discounts and fees. P.2011.46.234 annotated in red print: W.M. Strother, President, Geo. L. Marsteller, Vice Pres't, Sidney Strother, Sec'y and Treas. Strother Drug Co. successors., P.2011.46.235 completed in type to Fowlkes Haythe Co. on April 25, 1903 for "1 keg Soda 112 lbs" and "1 doz Ext. Lemon #0" for $1.80. Also contains typed notes: 25-5, case 12 and sent to C. H. Beasley & Bro. Stamped: Less 2% if paid in 10 days.
