Originally settled by mill operators in 1750, Lakewood became a winter resort area in 1880. It housed the prominent hotels Laurel House (1880-1932), Lakewood Hotel (1891-1925), and Laurel-in-the-Pines (1891-1967). Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death.
