Residences, fields, and a railroad station are visible in the distance, and Gold Run lake lies in the foreground. The school was established in 1832 as the State Institution for the Deaf and Dumb and first opened to students in 1883. It was renamed New Jersey School for the Deaf in 1900 and the Marie H.
