Mill includes the main building, boiler house, machine room, and chimney. Mill was rented by Charles Magarge (President of Bank of Germantown) in 1844 and purchased by him in 1853 and thereafter expanded to house a Fourdrinier Paper machine. It was the first mill to use wood pulp to make paper. - Description
- Trade card promoting the Elkhart Paper Pail Company and depicting a racist caricature of an African American man minstrel. The man is attired in a uniform-like costume of a black top hat with a gold band; a blue jacket with gold buttons and epaulettes and a black belt; white pants; white gloves; and black knee-length boots. He pulls on a red cord for a curtain with his right hand. He carries a pail labeled "Elkhart Paper Pail" in his left hand. The Elkhart Paper Pail Company was founded circa 1883. The factory was damaged by fire in 1886 and 1887. - Pictorial envelope containing vignettes of paper cutters and advertising text on the recto and verso. Vignette on recto shows a reversible roll paper cutter under a "counter." A hand tears off a piece of paper from a large roll with the cutter blade. Vignettes on verso show "Roll Desk Tablet, the most convenient article of its kind ever manufactured"; "6 and 12 Inch no. 1 Reversible Cutter in Pyramid"; and "the Reversible with name on face of blade. Any name can be placed thereon." Each cutter contains a large roll of paper. Signage on the side of the building sprawls across ten bays of windows and reads, "Knight's patent paper machine, manufactory," and a smaller sign above the entrance reads, "A.L. Knight & Co." Three workers stand at every level as a man prepares a package to be hoisted from the sidewalk into the building. A gentleman stands in the entryway watching the workers, as another guides a horse-drawn cart out of the manufactory's enclosed yard. A person seated and writing is visible through the first floor window. Includes a partial view of industrial buildings in the background. A.L. These dryers were invented and patented several years since, and are now in operation in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, Kentucky and New Jersey. - Interior view of the Cathay Restaurant located at 1221-1223 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. Shows the view from the second-floor staircase, looking down at the main dining room on the first level and the balcony sections that flank the main stairway. Depicts on the first floor, a line of red tray holders for waitstaff in the left and rows of white table-clothed dining tables and chairs. On the balconies are additional rows of white table-clothed dining tables and chairs. The edges of the balcony are lined with different-colored figurine lamps with fringed shades. Colored paper lanterns and a chandelier hang from the ceiling. Durand & Sons, Druggists (136); Sleeper & Jeanneret, Jewelry (1388-140); Howell & Brothers, Paper Hangings (142); Langdon’s Daguerreotypes and W. S. Martien, Publisher and Bookseller(144); American Sunday School Union (146); and Jones’ Hotel, Bridges & West proprietors (152). North side includes Dr. Jayne’s Philadelphia Arcade, Dr. Davison’s Arcade Baths, and D. Robinson, Bookseller and Stationer (205-209); N.Y. Journal of Fine Arts Agency (203 1/2); Bolivar House (201-203); Chestnut St. Theater (199); and Schenck’s Pulmonic Syrup and Blood’s Despatch (197). Also shows a few of the buildings adorned with flag or statuary. Sleeper & Jeanneret signage (138-140) included on plate as pasted-on details., Advertisements promote twelve of the businesses depicted with signage, as well as John M. Coleman, Importer of Sheffield and German Cutlery, Guns, Pistols, &c (209) and William White, Chemist, S.E. cor. Twelfth and Pine Sts. White's full-page advertisement contains testimonials and several lines of text describing the benefits of “White’s Hair Regenerator, or Amber Gloss” and “White’s Essence of Jamaica Ginger.” Most of the small advertisements include several lines of promotional text and ornamented type.
