Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront adorned with signage on North Second Street above Market Street. A female patron stands at the open entry and peers into the display window filled with lavishly-designed lamps, chandeliers, and light fixtures. Inside the store, a clerk assists a female patron reviewing a display table of lamps. On the sidewalk, a couple strolls past a pile of boxes near the store, a street urchin carries a bundle, and a boy peddler walks with his basket of wares. Also shows partial views of neighboring businesses with signage. Includes a hat store, probably Robert F. Maull's, adorned with a display of hats strung from ropes hanging from the roof and sidewalk awning (30) and a shoe store adorned with an awning (32). Title: Souvenir of the coldest winter on record. Scene on the Delaware River at Philada. during the severe winter of 1856
Description: Frolicking genre scene showing hundreds of persons skating and sledding on the frozen river in front of the old Navy Yard at Southwark. Skaters and sledders include men pushing women in chairs with blades, men pushing a sleigh of women passengers, a man pulling a boy on a sled, and a man being pulled by a dog running through a crowd of skaters. In the foreground, a couple stands and watches the activity; a woman peddler, seated on a stool, sells an apple to a boy; and a man has fallen on the ice, near a boy leaning on another boy. In the background, a sleigh ride has been fabricated with several men pushing a large pivoted pole lever to propel a toboggan of women passengers in a circle on an area free from congestion. Watch houses stand near by, with throngs of people surrounding the sheds. Moored ships, steamboats, and sailing vessels line the shore. Title: Harrison & Newhall, corner of Race and Crown streets, Philadelphia. Commission merchants and importers Rio coffee, sugars, hides &c. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement with heavy street activity showing the Harrison & Newhall Refinery, formerly the Penington Sugar Refinery. Refinery reestablished and expanded as the Harrison & Newhall Refinery circa 1855 at 409 Race Street. In front of the refinery, laborers load horse-drawn drays with barrels as another man in an apron leads another dray past the fenced northwest corner of Race and Crown streets (former residence of Edward Penington). At that corner, a man leans on a street lamp across from a man on horseback in the street and two street urchins on the sidewalk eyeing a well-dressed couple. At the other end of the street, a traffic jam occurs as the barrels on the dray of a rambunctious horse roll off the vehicle in front of a horse-drawn cart and omnibus. A horse-handler and displaced carriage driver discuss the accident in the street as a peddler, the possible cause of the commotion, nonchalantly carries a tray of wares on his head past the scene. Also shows barrels being hoisted outside of the refinery building.
