Earle (nephew of glazier and gallery owner James Earle) established his looking glass, frame making, and picture dealing business in 1832 on the 100 block of South Fifth Street. Earle relocated to the 800 block of Chestnut Street by 1840 and the business was renamed James S. Earle & Son by 1858 and James S.
