The square, described by visitors in the 1850s as a bucolic haven within the city, was previously used as a pasture, a burial ground for the neighboring German Reformed Church, and a drilling ground for troops. This 1860 winter view shows the many trees of the square lining paths that had been fitted with rows of small stools to discourage loitering. The square also contained a noted central marble fountain built in 1837 that can be seen in the c.1870 photograph below. Description: Glass negative showing exterior view of the back of the Independence Hall. A wide path with benches leads through a Independence Square toward the building. Pedestrians pass through the square on the flagstone walks under the trees that dot the park. Construction on Independence Hall began in 1732 and completed in 1753 after the designs of Andrew Hamilton (1676-1741) and Edmund Woolly (1695-1771). It originally housed all three branches of the Pennsylvania colonial government, as well as being host to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitutional Convention. The building went through numerous renovations and reconstructions, until in 1950 when the National Park Service restored much of the architecture and interior to its 1776 appearance. Title: Promenade in Washington Square
Description: Caricature depicting a modishly dressed white couple (man and woman) strolling through Philadelphia's Washington Square near the Society Hill section of the city. The woman wears a bright yellow dress with extremely puffed leg o'mutton sleeves and a dramatically large yellow hat with a massively wide brim. Blue and yellow striped ribbons are attached to the hat and hang down from the brim. A kerchief and necklace adorn her neck. She carries a purple purse and a pink umbrella in her left hand and a pink monocle in her right. She holds the monocle close to the side of her chin.
