Title: Breuker & Kessler, lithographers, South West Corner Seventh & Chestnut Sts "Know all men by these presents: that Breuker & Kessler of Philadelphia, possessing ample facilities are prepared to execute in the finest style of the art, all orders for lithographing, including bonds, certificates of stock and deposit, checks, drafts, notes, letter note and bill headings, bills of exchange, cards, insurance policies, blanks etc. also show cards and labels in colors. Having given special attention to the engraving and printing of bonds and by using a combination of geometrical lathe and rosette designs we are able to produce a class of work so intricate as to prevent counterfeiting, it being impossible to imitate the same with any degree of accuracy. Description: Advertisement containing an interior view of the shop at 116 Chestnut Street (ie. 320 Chestnut Street) after a daguerreotype depicting a long row of presses lined along the perimeter of the room near tall windows for natural light. Pressmen work on stones propped flat and on an angle. The man at the first press rolls ink onto a stone, as another man, probably an apprentice, carries a stone from the reserve of fresh stones arranged and stacked on the shelves on the opposite wall. Title: Jacob Haehnlen's lithographic & steam powered letter press printing rooms
Description: Proof print of advertisement containing an ornate border surrounding a central view of the exterior of the six-story brownstone and print shop owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising the "lithographic establishment" adorns the doorway, front, and side of "Goldsmith’s Hall." Building also adorned with large display windows and an eagle above the entranceway. View includes street and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk, stand in doorways, and enter the shop. In the street, horse-drawn wagons and drays, including one hauling crates marked "J.H.," pass in the street near a man pushing a hand-cart loaded with crates. Shop included salesrooms and offices, a machine shop, a drying room, lithographic presses, and card, handbill, and pamphlet printing presses. Border composed of cards containing ornate letters spelling Haehnlen's name and examples of his genres of work, including portraiture, industrial views, and machine imagery. Haehnlen established his own studio at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1866 and operated his business from all but the first floor. He sold his shop to the firm Lehman & Bolton in 1870. Description: View showing the house owned by Jacob Graff in which Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Signage adorns the building advertising current tenants William Brown, clothing, and D.E. Thompson's Book and Job Printing Office. Also shows an awning reading "Birth Place of Liberty" attached to the building; playbills on display; a hitching post; and a view of the adjacent business, William Jordan's Shoe Warehouse at 232 Market Street. Description: Advertisements for sponsoring businesses depicted and not located on Chestnut Street, including Dr. D. Jayne’s Family Medicines, 84 Chestnut Street; The Public Ledger Offices, Third & Chestnut; Dr. William Young’s The Pocket Aesculapius; Or, Every One His Own Physician, No. 152 Spruce Street, Philadelphia; and E. Ketterlinus’ Fancy Printing & Lithographic Establishment, No. 40 North Fourth Street, below Arch. Advertisements contain several lines of advertising text. Jayne’s advertisement contains promotions about his medical background, wide distribution, and scientific preparations of his medicines; endorsements; and descriptions of his vermifuge, alterative, balsam, pills, hair tonic and dye, and ague pills. Public Ledger advertisement includes subscription and advertising prices for the Public Ledger; subscription prices for The Dollar Newspaper; and promotion of the variety of printed works executed by the Job & Fancy Steam Printing Establishment.
