- Description
- Albums of predominantly nature prints of leaves produced by inking both sides of the specimen, placing it between a folded sheet of paper, and pulling the sheet through a printing press. Sheets contain one to several specimens (a few numbered) and several are annotated with the date of printing, inscriptions, and identifications of specimens. Some sheets contain manuscript notes about the provenance of and how the specimens were dried or inked, the condition of the leaves, their medicinal uses, and descriptions of the plants from which they came. Inscriptions of note include "Engraven by the Greatest and Best engraver in the Universe"(v. 1, p. 2); "... leaves dried and press'd in my Heap of News-Papers for 7 or 8 years" (v. 1, p. 43); "Done July 18th 1742, when I impress'd 6 or 8 sheets more for my Frd's Kent, Bard, Pratt, Browne, Shoemaker, &" (v. 1, p. 74); "These were done in my new Press which Joseph Watkins made & now brought Home 2nd of May 1734" (v. 1, p. 94); "Done July 1st 1744 with L' & Vel't B'll"(v. 1, p. 95) and "From Jno. A founder and secretary of the Library Company of Philadelphia, he engaged in the study of botany through Peter Collinson, the library's London book agent. Between circa 1731 and circa 1744, he created hundreds of leaf prints as records of botanical specimens he gathered himself and from networks. Breintnall also most likely used his experience with leaf printing to assist Franklin in the creation of a metal cast of a leaf impression used to print currency incapable to be counterfeited.

- Historical print based on lore depicting a 1774 meeting in Boston between British Massachusetts Royal Governor General Thomas Gage and a "committee" of boys about British troops infringing their rights by destroying their snow hills and skating ice when unprovoked. Depicts the rotund Gage seated in a palatial drawing room decorated with an ornate rug; damask-style, blue wallpaper; red drapery; a large painted portrait of King George III; a book case; and a fireplace with a mantle adorned with a gold sculpture of the British lion. Gage, in uniform, sits in an arm chair near two of his officers, in uniform. One is seated at a table, covered in a cloth with an ornate design and the other stands next to him. A ledger and sheets of paper rest on the table. A delegation of boys, in long jackets, pantaloons, and tri-corn hats, enters the room through an open door. The lead boy extends his hand toward Gage as the others look at the room, each other, and the royal governor. An African American male servant, attired in a blue jacket and pantaloons and depicted with simian-like features, tends to a fire in the fireplace behind Gage. Written about in children's history texts beginning with Samuel Griswold Goodrich's in the 1830s, the episode is likely based on a 1775 incident involving a servant of General Frederick Haldiman, Haldiman, and a group of Boston boys about which Gage heard and then commented they had "caught the spirit of the times.", Artist's signature in lower right corner of stone., Date from copyright statement: Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1864, by Wm. - Clever advertisement in the style of trompe l'oeil containing examples of the lithographer's work interlayered on top of a black background. Includes billheads, bills of laden, checks, maps and plans, marine and landscape views, portraiture, animal portraiture, sheet music, professional cards and advertisements. Some of the corners of the prints curl up. Pictorial elements of note include a portrait of Aloys Senefelder, the inventor of lithography; the business card of lithographic artist "A. Newsam"; advertising prints showing Duval's "Lithographic Establishment," and the Merchant's Exchange; and sheets of advertisement text in script promoting Duval's ability to "execute orders at short notice," his types of prints, and the advantages of the "facility" and "cheapness" of "facsimiles" for businesses. - Description
- Advertisement using trompe l'oeil to depict a genre scene set in a cobbler shop as an illustrated poster with a curling edge. Shows a mother with her two sons (attired in dresses) patronizing the shop. The cobbler, at his work table, holds up a 'Solar Tip" shoe to the child showing his toe-worn shoe and offers the advice "Buy the Genuine Solar Tip. Then your shoes won't need mending." The mother holds the hands of the boy who has lifted his foot, his toe poking from the worn shoe, at which a cat, with a ribbon collar, swats his paw. The cat stands by the cobbler's feet and near boots soaking in a bucket. Tools are mounted on the side of the cobbler's table, and above his workspace a Solar Tip shoe advertisement hangs next to a shelve of personal wares and a row of shoe forms. A boy patron holding shoes under his arm descends a staircase in the background. Also contains the firm's trademark that reads "The Best Sole Leather Tip Made. Patd. February 19, 1878. J.M. & Co. - Description
- Advertisement showing the long three-story, brick factory occupied by Robert Wood's iron works at 1126 Ridge Avenue. The central portion of the building looms a few feet over the wings, and is adorned by tall, narrow windows on the second story, with a decorative cornice topped by a statue, bell cupola, and advertising flag. Statues of a lion and two dogs adorn an overhang near the open doorway of the iron foundry inside this central portion, under which a man and woman enter the office and warerooms. Visible inside the factory are several men at a forge, along with laborers working in the left and right wings. A man driving a horse-drawn company carriage emerges from the right wing. Four laborers load a lion statue into a cart on Ridge Avenue. Several boxes, addressed to "Mobile, Aa.," "Havana," "Jackson," "San Francisco, Ca.," "Smith & Co., St. Louis," "Cincinnati, Oo.," "Jones & Co., New Orleans," are scattered in the street nearby. Two laborers load (or unload) an iron railing from a covered cart in the foreground. - Illustration depicts the enslaved woman, bare-chested, kneeling on one leg, and holding up her chained hands as in prayer., Addressed to Mr. S. T. haulk [sic] Salburry [i.e., Salisbury] South Carolina., Inscribed: Advertised July 1st., Completed in manuscript from Thos. Wall, Granville, Ohio to "Dear Sir" on May 25, 1840. Reads: Dear Sir is this the way you th treat slaves - if so you had better set thith free and Let them go - the load be upon your head at the [bar?] of god. Then god Say all you an [sic] your slaves must come before god and then be juge [sic] at the Bar of god - Set the [?] free and Let he aogo [sic]. Let the slave go free - [?] and I am - Do you [sic] Work yourself., Illustration of a kneeling male slave is a variant of the image popularized by Josiah Wedgwood. Formed in 1787, the Committee for the Abolition of the Slave Trade designed and adopted as its seal the image of a supplicant African male slave asking "Am I not a man and a brother?" That same year, Wedgwood, a ceramics manufacturer and member of the Committee, issued the image as a medallion, which was distributed in America. The image became a popular anti-slavery icon and was soon widely reproduced on artifacts and in print in the United States and in Britain. During the 1820s, a female counterpart with the motto “Am I not a woman and a sister?” was created by British abolitionists and quickly embraced in the United States, particularly among women abolitionists., Purchased with funds from the Albert M. - Collection of seventeen Japanese bookplates owned by Eiichi Hirose. Sixteen bookplates were designed and created by Yumimaro Ohmori, and one was created by Koson Nakayama. The bookplates depict scenes of Japanese landscapes, flowers, insects and animals, and people, including a person on a bridge over water and looking at a mountain; a man leading a horse; two people at a camp fire; a Japanese woman attired in a kimono; a young man farmer riding backwards on an ox; a potted plant; cherry blossoms; dragonflies; and a bird flying over bamboo. Two type-written letters are included describing some of the bookplate designs and gifting the bookplates to the Library Company of Philadelphia., Title supplied by cataloger., Date from letter of gift., Partial transcript of letter accompanying the gift: I enclosed my ex-libris in use, designed and engraved by Yumimaro Ohmori, a graduate of the Tokyo College of Fine Arts, and would be glad to make an exchange of ex-libris with you. Oct. 8th, 1935., Text of accompanying letter: The design of this ex-libris represents a tombstone characteristic of 12th century Japan. This plate is designed and used by Koson Nakayama of Tokyo. The design of this plate is symbolical of dramatic art, the three colors, perhaps of curtains, representing the three largest theatres that existed in Yedo (present Tokyo). This plate is used by Shuzan E. Hirose. The design show a youthful farmer rising an ox. From this one may infer that the owner (Hirose) is a collector of books on agriculture and rural problems.

- Scrapbook possibly compiled by Fanny Keene containing trade cards, sentiment cards, holiday cards, rewards of merit, die cut and embossed scraps, and a temperance pledge card primarily issued in New England. Majority of the contents are chromolithographs and some contain trompe l’oeil, embossed, die cut and overlay designs. Pictorial themes include landscape, marinescape, seasonal, residential and genre views; women and children; fruits and flowers; animals (cats, dogs, mice, and birds); comic scenes; and portraiture, including Frances Folsom Cleveland. Several of the holiday cards contain religious passages and sentiments and several of the trade cards advertise sewing machines, patent medicines, soaps, and J. & P. Coats thread. - Advertisement containing a view of the busy foundry in a trompe l'oeil frame. Shows a gentleman, possibly the proprietor, leaving the door of the office connected to the large workshop in which laborers toil on machine parts. A boy carrying a small part walks toward the gentleman. He passes two men talking at the corner of the small office building near the side of the workshop lined by factory debris. On the sidewalk, laborers finish a large gear propped up on a platform. The men are surrounded by machine parts that lie on the ground and line the outside of another factory building. Nearby, two workers with crowbars and a piece of cylinder await a horse-drawn cart being backed up to the curb by a driver. Also shows a driver leading a horse and ox-drawn wagon hauling a large steam pipe in the street, a locomotive passing between the rear of the factory and fenced pastureland, and a steamboat docked near a hoist on the riverbank in the background. - Advertisement showing the busy forge shop of "Henry Beagle's Hame Manufactory" on the 400 block of Magnolia Street. Within the shop, laborers enter the doorway, toil at windows, and hoist a bundle of hames (i.e., part of the harness that fits around the neck of a draught horse through which the reigns pass). Outside of the building, other workers, including a boy, gather bundles of hames, transport the pieces by hand-drawn cart, and load them on to the back of a horse-drawn dray as a couple passes on the sidewalk. Several working smoke stacks adorn the roof of the shop and a couple passes on the sidewalk. In the street, a horse-drawn freight car travels. A lad leads the horses as the freight driver steers from within the front of the car. A small boy sits next to the driver who stands. Also shows neighboring buildings. - Racist trade card promoting Carr & Murray, dealers in household furnishings, and depicting trompe l'oeil image with an African American boy portrayed with exaggerated features and bust length. - Trimmed metamorphic trade card promoting Chase & Sanborn's coffee. Depicts a quirky, racist scene with a trompe l’oeil aesthetic and including the oversized head of a Black man with exaggerated features in a North African setting. Shows an African man attired in a yellow hooded robe on a white horse and holding a long spoon to an enormous face of an African man. His head covered in a green and red turban has torn through a wall. He purses his lips out to the spoon. In the center of the image is a white coffee cup with a blue stripe and the text "Standard java, Chase and Sanborn, Boston" written in red. In the right foreground, holding a basket, is a barefooted African woman attired in a white dress with red stripes and cap sleeves; a yellow vest; and red, head kerchief. In the background is a building with Moresque decorative features in the doorway and window. Illustrated on the verso is a partial view of a black man. Shows his chin and lower lip, his torso, and his legs above his ankles. His arms are raised, and he is attired in white pants with blue stripes; a green jacket with yellow lining; a white collared shirt; and red vest and bowtie. Caleb Chase (1831-1908) established a coffee and tea company in 1864. Chase partnered with coffee seller James Sanborn (1835-1903) in 1874 to form Chase & Sanborn. It was the first company to pack and ship roasted coffee in sealed tins. In 1893, the firm supplied the coffee to all of the salons at the Chicago World's Fair.
