Title: Philadelphia baths, corner of George and Seventh Sts., near Chestnut Street
Description: Advertisement showing the bath house established in 1828 by patent medicine proprietor William Swaim at the northeast corner of Seventh and George, i.e., Sansom streets. A woman and man enter separate entrances to the three-and-a-half story facility, and two pairs of women and a man walk on the sidewalk. Also shows the fenced courtyard adjoining, and the buildings behind and neighboring the bathhouse. The bathhouse contained separate apartments for women and men with fifty tubs made of tin-plated copper or Italian marble. Title: Public baths. Thos. E. J. Kerrison's arcade-baths
Description: Advertisement showing the public bathhouse originally built 1826-1827 as a shop gallery after the designs of John Haviland at 615-619 Chestnut Street. Patrons enter one of the four arches to the visible interior of the arcade that contains stairs over a central enclosed space that is flanked by corridors of rooms. The front facade also contains statuary and advertising signs in two niches above gated cellar entrances to "D. Gibb, Franklin House." The signs promote the tenant oyster house. Also shows a boy posting a broadside on the building and a man and woman passerby. Kerrison operated the baths 1845-1849. Building demolished circa 1859-1860., Date from Poulson inscription on recto: Aug. 1847. Description: Street view depicting businesses along the north side of Chestnut Street between Sixth and Seventh Streets. Most of the buildings include signage. Includes, right to left, the four-story brick building with Blood’s Dispatch and Dr. J.H. Schenck & Co. "Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup" (601 Chestnut Street); the second building of the Chestnut Street Theatre (603-609 Chestnut Street, built 1820-1822 after the designs of William Strickland); the three-and one-half story hotel Bolivar House (611-613 Chestnut Street); Dr. Jayne's Philada Arcade & Dr. Davidson's Arcade Baths (615-619 Chestnut Street); Columbia House hotel operated by Ferguson & Bro. and tenanted by tailor E. G. Dorsey (625-631 Chestnut Street); and the three-story red brick building tenanted by L. Benkert's Boot Store (633 Chestnut Street), "Philadelphia Fashions" publisher Francis Mahan(635 Chestnut Street), and druggist A. Smith (637-639 Chestnut Street).
