Allaire (1785-1858) founded the Allaire Iron Works Company (later Howell Iron Works) in 1815. Allaire, New Jersey became a factory town for the company that built engines for steamboats circa 1824. The row homes for workers were completed in 1833, the blast furnace was made in 1831, and the Episcopalian church was built 1832-1836. Financial difficulties and discovery of iron ore deposits in Pennsylvania closed the Company in 1850. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death.
