Description: Racist trade card illustration depicting a group of well-dressed African American men and women strutting past other African American men, women, and children. The two well-dressed men are attired in striped pants, suit jackets, collared shirts, bow ties, and top hats. They both carry canes. The two well-dressed women are attired in frilled patterned long sleeved dresses and caps. One woman carries a parasol in her gloved hand. The other carries a handkerchief. The onlookers are dressed in plain clothing. A dog, a tree, a small wooden house, and a fence are visible in the image. The figures are depicted with exaggerated features. The illustration is based on one of a series of racist cartoons drawn by Sol Eytinge and printed in Harper's Weekly in 1878 which depicts the courtship and marriage of families by "The Twins." C.E. Description: Trade card promoting L.F. Shanovski’s shoe store and depicting a racist caricature of a Chinese man upset that a cat has taken a rat from his plate. Shows the man, wearing a queue hairstyle and attired in red pants and brown cloth slip-on shoes, holding a large white plate across his chest and a pair of chopsticks in his right hand. He opens his mouth upset that a cat is taking a dead rat from his plate. Louis F. Shanovski was born in Germany and moved to Chicago in the early 1870s, opening a shoe store in circa 1877. Description: Racist trade card promoting the Working Shoe Makers Co-Operative Union and depicting a scene with African American caricatures originally created for Harper’s Weekly in 1878 by Sol Eytinge that satirized the courtship and marriage of and the start of families by "The Twins." Shows the twins, attired in yellow hats decorated with a red feather and long-sleeved yellow dresses with a white collar and a red belt, standing on the deck of the ship with their husbands. The husband in the left is attired in a white collared shirt, a blue jacket, red pants, and black shoes. The other twin’s husband in the right is attired in a blue hat, a white collared shirt, a green jacket, red and white striped pants, and black shoes. The couples, newly married, are “off for Europe” and look over the ship to say goodbye to the people on the dock. In the foreground, a number of African American men, attired in hats and suits, and women, attired in hats and dresses, talk amongst themselves and wave goodbye. In the left, a man stands up over the crowd, attired in a black hat, a red jacket, and yellow pants, and throws a bouquet of flowers at the couples onto the deck.
