Description: Advertisement containing a central interior view of the bustling manufactory bordered by several captioned vignettes of men and women at specific tasks, and the mechanisms used, in the manufacture of blank books. Central view depicts several woman at work seated at two tables in the center of the room surrounded by men at work stations lining the space lighted by windows in the right and rear of the area. Piles of pages of books rest in front of the workers. In the foreground, women sew as at the front end of the table as ladies at the rear toil at folding pages. At the work stations, rows of men work at finishing pages. In the background, men operate book presses and other machinery, and transport reams of papers near women folding pages below a loft. On the upper floor, men work at stations across from shelves of reams of paper as a boy carries a mound of book pages down the stairs to the lower floor. Also shows the walls adorned with a cabinet, posted papers, and a man's coat and hat. Work vignettes show "girls" sewing and folding pages and male employees rounding, stamping, gilding and extra finishing bindings, book pressing, cutting and operating large ruling and cutting machines. Other vignettes show a board cutting machine; Sewing bench; Bookbinders plough; a display of a pile of blank books and associated writing materials; and a view of the Smith & Co. storefront (500 block of Market Street) at which patrons stand in a doorway across from a crate covered with books., Also contains several lines of advertising text describing the several types of merchandise "which will be sold at very low prices." Description: Racist trade card depicting an interior scene of a set of African American conjoined twin sisters, their mother, their father, and their male suitor. The twins curtsy and their suitor bows his head. The twins are attired in a yellow and red dotted dress with a roffled hem and white collars. Their mother is attired in a blue and red dress with a white apron. The twins' father is attired in a green jacket, a white collared shirt, a yellow bow tie, red pants, and black boots. The twins' suitor is attired in a black jacket, a white collared shirt, a red bow tie, red and blue striped pants, and black shoes. He holds a brown hat in his right hand to his chest. Visible in the background of the scene are framed works of art on the wall, a table, a vase with flowers, a window, and a clock. All of the figures are portrayed with exaggerated features. The illustration is based on a racist series of African American caricatures originally created for Harper’s Weekly in 1878 by Sol Eytinge that satirized the courtship, marriage, and the start of families by "The Twins." A Bismarck Range stove is depicted on the verso of the trade card. Title: Yohe's, late Jones' Hotel. On the south side of Chestnut St., next to the Clymer mansion (afterward Geo. Harrison's residence) between Sixth and Seventh St. The site, in the olden times, of the celebrated "Oeller's hotel."
Description: Shows the hotel originally built circa 1800 as the residence of Benjamin Say by Jacob Vogdes at 616-620 Chestnut Street. Notices adorn the hotel entranceway. Also shows partial views of adjacent businesses including James B. Smith & Co., booksellers, publishers, blank book manufacturers and stationers (610 Chestnut) and Howell & Brother, wallpaper manufacturers (622 Chestnut). Title: The old Phila. fire department. Period of 1850. The great engine contest on Sunday evening July 7th 1850 at 5th & Market sts
Description: Arousing scene after the memory of Spieler showing the city's volunteer fire companies battling the July 7, 1850 fire at Peter Wright & Sons glass store on the north side of the 500 block of Market Street. Shows firefighters, in full uniforms, congesting the street around the market houses and in front of the burning building. Members, including an African American firefighter, from the United States, Vigilant, Diligent, Southwark, Pennsylvania, Weccaco, Liberty, and several other companies battle the blaze using hand pump engines and hose carriages. The men run and connect hoses, transport the vehicles, and spray streams of water at the smoking building that also contains the businesses of Hieskell, Hoskins & Co., dry goods and James Smith & Co., booksellers and publishers. Other firefighters pump the engines, blow trumpets, and stand on the roof of the storefronts. Several lines of hoses, several weighed down and or leaking water, criss cross in the street in the foreground. Clusters of spectators, including men, women, and children gather near the firefighters and under the market sheds. Contents include images of buildings, genre scenes, and allegorical figures. Many of the items also include ornate borders. Materials document University of Pennsylvania medical department courses; a picnic at Mr. John F. Parke’s Grove (1853); Pennsylvania Horticultural Society events, including admittance for a "Lady to the Stated Meetings", bazaars, and Christmas Eve party; the Baltimore Assemblies; admittance to the Great Central Fair (1864) and Hillebrand & Lewis Gymnastic Institute; Mr. & Mrs. John A. Description: Collection of billheads, dated between 1880 and 1898, containing decorative and ornate lettering, ornamented type, vignette illustrations, and pictorial details. Illustrations depict exteriors of storefronts and factories (some adorned in signage); pharmaceutical apparatus and goods, including "patent shaving mug," mortar and pestles, scales, and rates, barrels, and jugs of medicinals; and scenes of a harbor view, a druggist in his pharmacy, and a blacksmith at work on his anvil. Some of the exterior views include patrons entering buildings, street and pedestrian traffic, as well as laborers at work.
