Title: "Virginia hoe-down"
Description: Aboard a steamer on the Mississippi River, a black deck-hand and a fiddler hold their own "Virginia hoe-down." The engraving accompanies T.B. Thorpe's "Remembrances of the Mississippi," and corresponds with a passage in which he describes the festive, light-hearted, and "happy" nature of "the negroes of the Mississippi." "With professional boat-men," Thorpe wrote," they are always favorites, and at night, when the 'old ark' is tied up, their acme of human felicity is a game of 'old sledge,' enlivened by a fiddle. On such ocassions the master of the instrument will touch off the 'Arkansas traveler,' and then gradually sliding into a 'Virginia hoe-down,' he will be accompanied by a genuine darkie keeping time, on the light and fantastic heel-and-toe tap." Description: View showing the innovative steamboat powered by an underwater Ericsson screw propeller, and named for supporter Capt. Robert F. Stockton of the U.S. Navy, during a trial on the Delaware River near the old Navy Yard and Windmill Island. Fourteen men stand on the vessel adorned with a smoke stack, compressor, and American flag. In the foreground, a barrel floats near three men in a skiff sailing in front of the steamboat. In the background, sailing vessels traverse the river and cityscape is visible. Description: Advertisement containing a view of the busy foundry in a trompe l'oeil frame. Shows a gentleman, possibly the proprietor, leaving the door of the office connected to the large workshop in which laborers toil on machine parts. A boy carrying a small part walks toward the gentleman. He passes two men talking at the corner of the small office building near the side of the workshop lined by factory debris. On the sidewalk, laborers finish a large gear propped up on a platform. The men are surrounded by machine parts that lie on the ground and line the outside of another factory building. Nearby, two workers with crowbars and a piece of cylinder await a horse-drawn cart being backed up to the curb by a driver. Also shows a driver leading a horse and ox-drawn wagon hauling a large steam pipe in the street, a locomotive passing between the rear of the factory and fenced pastureland, and a steamboat docked near a hoist on the riverbank in the background. Description: Racist trade card promoting Hart & Smith's steamboat route on the Indian River in Florida. Depicts caricatures of African Americans picking cotton on a plantation. Shows an African American man, attired in a hat, a blue collared shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows, and blue pants, bending over and putting cotton into a large basket. To the left of the man, an African American boy, attired in an orange, short-sleeved shirt and orange pants rolled up to the knees, places cotton into the same basket. In the left, an African American woman, attired in a white headkerchief, a blue shirt and apron, and an orange skirt, bends over to pick up a basket overflowing with cotton. Behind her, an African American woman, attired in an orange dress, apron, and a blue checked shawl, stands with her right hand on her hip and her left hand balancing a large basket on top of her head. A man, attired in a white collared shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbows and blue pants, walks and steadies a basket on his left shoulder with both hands. Hart (1827-1895) ran the most prominent steamboat line in Florida, helping to make it a tourist destination. In 1883, the Hart Line began a steamboat route on the Indian River.
