She sits on a wooden chair and holds a book in her left hand on her lap. Her right elbow rests on a desk. On top of the desk is a vase with flowers, a book, and papers. A curtain drapes down in the right. Richard Risley Carlisle (1814-1874), known as Professor Risley, assembled and managed a group of eighteen Japanese acrobats and musicians from Yokohama, Japan called the Imperial Japanese Troupe. They toured America in 1867, performing in Philadelphia in March.
