Eight prints illustrate the French folksong, "Marlbrough s'en va-t-en guerre". Views show the Duke of Marlborough leaving for war; Marlborough with another man carrying his sabre; Marlborough's wife looking through a telescope from a stone tower; two men with the deceased Marlborough's helmet; his wife's worried page carrying a letter; and his wife seated, with the page crying into a handkerchief nearby, after receiving news of Marlborough's death; and two men carrying his coffin. Additional illustrations depict men and women playing lawn tennis and archery; a group of children performing a variety of activities, including playing with a train, performing magic tricks, and training a dog; naked cherubs in the snow and on a swing; flowers; birds; bees; and butterflies. Description: Glass negative showing Marriott C. Morris' sister Elizabeth Canby Morris, his Aunt Beulah's neice Anna Rhoads, and Ellie Rhoads sitting on a bench situated on a porch of the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue. The women all wear high-necked dresses and hold tennis racquets. Morris on the right wears a hat and a monocle on a chain. Jet, the small black family dog, stands between Morris' legs. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Stouton, the former country seat of William MacPherson, was inhabited by the Webster family beginning in 1805., William MacPherson was the son of Captain John MacPherson (1726-1792) from Edinburgh. William served as lieutenant for the British army during the first year of the Revolutionary War, but joined the Colonial army under the leadership of Lafayette. Appointed surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia in 1789 and commanded the Philadelphia battalion, the "MacPherson Blues", during the Whiskey Insurrection in 1794. The women and Kimber sit on the ground. The women hold tennis racquets and Kimber holds a ball. Marriott Morris stands to the left, leaning against the porch railing. The women wear dark dresses. The men wear suits with white shirts. Emlen and Marriott Morris wear hats. Elliston Perot Morris bought property in Sea Girt, N.J. in 1875, where he built the summer home Avocado after designs by Quaker architect Hibberd Yarnall. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death.
