Persons at a distance desiring to have the bodies of their deceased friends, on the field of battle or elsewhere, disinterred, embalmed, disinfected, or prepared and sent home, can have it promptly attended to by application to the undersigned, at the office of Simon Gartland, 35 South Thirteenth Street, Philadelphia. N.B.--The process being the original Rosseau process, no zinc, arsenic or alcohol is used. Perfect satisfaction guaranteed. Respectfully refer to all the faculty in every city where we are known

Description: Advertisement showing a funeral possession led by an empty hearse passing by the two-and-one-half story residential business front of undertaker "P.R. Schuyler." A sign with the name of the proprietor and illustrated with a coffin adorns the arbor adjacent to the building. Trees line the sidewalk on which a lady, holding a parasol, strolls. She precedes the first (and fully visible) horse-drawn carriage in the procession on the cobblestone street. Also shows partial views, predominately roof and upper windows, of neighboring and surrounding buildings. Description: Advertisement showing the office building and storefront for the undertaker and "Coffin Ware-House" at 93 Coates, i.e., 225-227 Fairmount Avenue. A male patron enters the doorway of the three-story office "N. Helverson Undertaker." A sign advertising "Coffins Ready Made" adorns the showcase window. A doormat covers the small step preceding the entrance and the cellar doors to the building are open. In the right, a woman appears interested in an out of view display at the barely visible adjacent storefront. At the warehouse, workers haul coffins near the open doorway of the four-story building. A sign illustrated with a coffin and the text "Coffin Ware-House" is displayed in the first-floor window and workers are visible in two of the upper ones. A tree stands in front of the building near a two-horse drawn hearse parked in the street. Title: Funeral Car, erected by Wm. H. Moore & Son (Undertakers, No. 181 Arch St. Pha.) Especially for the occasion of the funeral obsequies of the Late President of the United States, General Zachary Taylor, Philadelphia, July 30th, 1850
Description: View showing the horse-drawn catalfaque drawn by eight white horses and led by eight grooms displayed during the mourning ceremonies arranged by Philadelphia city councils for the 12th president who died July 9, 1850. Black draping, fringes, and a canopy surmounted by an eagle figure adorn the car. Black covers are draped over the horses. The grooms wear black suits and hats. The hats are adorned with white bands that fall down the length of the men's backs. Also contains a simple border with filigree at the cornices. The July 30th funeral obsequies included a military parade, a civic procession, and a memorial sermon given by Rev. Title: [Stevens-Cogdell and Sanders-Venning family portrait collection]
Description: Primarily studio portraits and snapshots of members of the Venning line of the middle-class Philadelphia African American family descended from the 19th-century white South Carolinian Richard Walpole Cogdell (1787-1866), and Sarah Martha Sanders (1815-1850), a Black enslaved woman. Includes professionally photographed group portraits depicting the family's participation in the Philadelphia African American music community of the early 20th century, including: the Mendelssohn Singing Society; Sid Stratton's Orchestra; the Treble Clef Mandolin and Guitar Club; and the Soap Box Social, a minstrel club associated with the African American political club, Citizen's Republican Club. Other formal portraiture includes the graduation portrait for the South Philadelphia High School for Girls class of 1921, including Lillie Venning and contralto Marian Anderson, and a group portrait of the Citizens Republican Club (ca. 1910). Collection also contains studio portraits and snaphots photographed during family summer excursions to Pleasantville and Atlantic City, New Jersey; portraits of family friends and family members through marriage; silhouettes of members of the Cogdell family cut by Master Hankes, i.e., Jarvis F. Hanks (ca. 1828); and an album (ca. 1860-ca. 1913) containing portraits of members of the Venning family and of unidentified sitters., Sitters include members from the Cogdell family, the Venning family, the Capps family, and the Saunders family. Cogdell family members include: Cecilia Cogdell, wife of Richard Walpole Cogdell, and three of their sons - James Gordon Cogdell, George Burgess Cogdell, and John Walpole Cogdell. Venning family members include: Richard Cogdell and Sarah Sanders' daughter, Julia Sanders Venning, her husband Edward Y. Venning (a contractor), and his brother, Richard DeReef Venning (a government clerk). Julia Sanders Venning and Edward Y. Venning's children - Louise Sanders Venning, Miranda Cogdell Venning (a school principal), Oliver Casey Venning (family historian), George Edward Venning (postal worker), Sarah (Sallie) Venning (Holden) (substitute teacher), and her husband William B.
