The first Philadelphia Gas Works, completed in 1834 after the designs of engineer Samuel V. Merrick is visible on the opposite block. Pennsylvania Railroad tracks run adjacent to a train shed and the gas works and a horse-drawn carriage stands in front of the hotel. The first gas works were expanded in 1850. A second facility, the Point Breeze Gas Works, was built 1851-1854 at Passyunk and Schuylkill avenues after the designs of engineer John C.
