Title: Elevation plan of Granite St. buildings and those connecting with Walnut, Dock and Front Streets
Description: Depicts three rows of elevations showing the basic architectural stylings of the twenty-three distinct Granite Street properties constructed by John Rice for Jesse Godley between 1849 and 1853. The first two rows show the front elevations of the north and south sides of Granite Street extending from Front to Dock Streets (100-127 Granite Street). The third row shows the east and west side elevations of Granite Street, including the underground storage vaults below the street and the front elevations of properties facing Front, Dock and Walnut Streets (200 block of South Front Street; 137-143 Dock Street; 100 block of Walnut Street). The plans include pre-consolidation property numbers; notes about properties that extend, and are accessible, from both Granite Street and Front, Walnut and Dock Streets; and pedestrian traffic, including laborers rolling barrels on the sidewalk, horse-drawn carts, and men and women walking on the sidewalks. Godley financed the "Granite Street Improvements" in anticipation of an increase in trade that the Central Railroad would bring to the area. Builders include John Rice, stone masons Lukens & Hutchinson, brick workers George R. Creely, and granite workers S.K. Hoxie, John C. Leiper, and William Keys. The innovative granite-covered storage vaults, twenty-four feet wide by three-hundred twenty-five feet long, were built under the street with a brick-arch arcade and for the joint use of tenants. Description: Disaster scene showing the commotion in front of the partially destroyed stores of John Brock & Co., and Gordon and Berger at 39 (i.e., 100 block) North Water Street. People hold a crowd back as fire fighters attend to the collapsing building spewing a cloud of smoke. A family, including a mother and child, flee past fire fighters rushing to a fallen comrade as debris falls down upon them. Also shows a man kneeling near the Vine Street Wharf as another stands in the center of the view with his arms up in the air. The explosion emanated from a fire started by the friction of a hoisting-machine igniting a large store of gunpowder and saltpeter in the Brock, and Gordon and Berger building. The blaze that spread about one square mile between Front and Callowhill streets destroyed actually about 367 houses and stores. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story offices and storefront known as the Girard Building (102-104, i.e., 306-308 Chestnut) tenanted by Goodyears, i.e., the Philadelphia warehouse of the New York Belting and Packing Company (104), "Peterson's Book Establishment," i.e., the store of publisher T.B. Peterson & Brothers, and C. J. Peterson, publisher of Peterson' Ladies national magazine (102). Lettering reading "Goodyears Rubber Packing & Belting Company" adorns the roof of the building. Through the open entryways and large display windows, clerks, patrons, and merchandise displays are visible in both stores. At Peterson's, clerks assist patrons with items from bookshelves surrounding the room in addition to a centrally located U-shaped display counter labeled "Peterson's Magazine." Stacks of books are displayed near the windows that contain promotions "Subscriptions for all Magazines" and "Chas. Dickens Complete Works."
