Title: Order of the United Daughters of America [membership certificate] Honesty, virtue & industry
Description: Membership certificate for the patriotic nativist women's society established in New York in 1845 as an auxilliary to the Order of United Americans. Contains a vignette portrait of Martha Washington flanked by the allegorical figures of Liberty and Justice perched in a cluster of clouds. Below on each side, columns entwined with the American flag and adorned with the American eagle and shield rest on pedestals decorated with horns of cornucopia. Between the columns, a "United Daughter" leads a little girl to another "United Daughter" who welcomes them into a temple adorned with garlands of flowers. Title: Death of Washington. Dec. 14. A.D. 1799
Description: Deathbed scene depicting Washington lying peacefully on a four poster bed, the curtains drawn, his head propped up on pillows, surrounded by his wife, grandchildren, a Quaker friend, the family physician (Dr. Craik), and a man and woman African American domestic. In the bedroom, dimly lit by candlelight from a nearby table, a somber Martha Washington, her grandson and granddaughter by her side, sits by Washington's bedside and holds his hand. On the opposite side of the bed, the physician checks for the President's pulse. The saddened Quaker and servants watch from the foot of the bed; the woman domestic kneels and cries. In the upper left corner above Washington's head, a hat and sword hang on the wall. Title: Washington's triumphal entry into New York, Nov. 25th, 1783
Description: Historic scene from the close of the American Revolution depicting General Washington, carrying his hat in his right hand and holding the reins in his left hand, on horseback and triumphantly parading his troops through a crowded New York City street on November 25, 1783. Following him closely on horseback are his principal officers: Governor George Clinton, General Frederick William Augustus, Baron von Steuben, General Thaddeus Kosciusko, General Gilbert Motier De La Fayette, Alexander Hamilton, General Henry Knox, General Israel Putnam, General Nathaniel Greene, and General Horatio Gates. Army personnel in the back carry the St. George cross flag, the New England Pine Tree flag, and the Washington life banner.
