Fourth Street., Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half story hotel at 15 South Fourth Street operated, as indicated by a placard above the door, by Horatio Wade. Wade remained proprietor from 1831 until 1833. Elegantly dressed guests enter the building, converse on the sidewalk, and rest and read inside near the first floor windows. On the sidewalk, well-dressed pedestrians stroll and an African American hotel porter pushes a wheelbarrow of luggage. The Indian Queen Hotel established in 1771, the building altered several times until razed in 1851, was until the mid 19th century incorrectly identified as the site of Thomas Jefferson's writing of the Declaration of Independence.

Description: Advertisement showing the Moore storefront within the two-story shop gallery built 1826-1827 after the designs of John Haviland at 615-619 Chestnut Street. Statuary, above empty niches, adorns the front facade of the four-arched gallery entrance and "JLM" is visible above the centrally-located storefront that is flanked by corridors lined with stores. Description: Advertisement showing the interior of the well-attended gymnasium, operated by James Roper on the 800 block of Market Street, in which several men exercise in front of a crowd of spectators. In the right, three men perform balance moves on a balance beam next to a wall adorned with a rack from which boxing gloves and squash rackets hang. Beside the beam, two men wearing boxing gloves converse near the pommel horse that two men utilize. In the front center and left of the room, two pairs of men, one pair wearing face guards, fence; two men pull weights attached to the ceiling; and another tests his strength on the parallel bars near men climbing poles. To the rear, other exercisers climb vertical and inclined ropes, hang and climb from exercise ladders, straddle and perform pull-ups on horizontal poles, and dangle upside down from a trapeze. Description: Advertisement looking east down Chestnut Street showing the large, prominent hotel opened in 1826 following the conversion by John Rea of several properties at 419-423 Chestnut Street. Gentlemen convene near the entranceway and portico of the hotel in front of which a carriage is parked. On the north side of the street, east of the hotel, several individuals, including couples and families, promenade and converse on the several blocks of businesses visible to the riverfront. Opposite the hotel, on the south side of the street, a couple promenades and boys play marbles in front of the former Second Bank of the United States (420 Chestnut) as another couple and several shadowy figures of pedestrians walk down the sidewalks in the background. In the street, a couple on horseback, an omnibus, and carriage travels. Title: Dawson's Brewery. N.W. corner of 10th & Filbert Streets
Description: Advertisement depicting an exterior view of the three-story corner brewery constructed circa 1822 and operated by Mordecai L. Dawson and William Morrison. Includes a partial view of the rear ell (right) and two signboards on the facade that read, "M.L. Dawson's Brewery". Barrels line the sidewalk of Filbert Street in front of the brewery where two men load them one-by-one onto a horse-drawn dray. Dawson and Morrison opened their brewery at 79 Chestnut Street in 1820, and moved to Tenth and Filbert Streets in 1830, after purchasing the old Farmers' Brewery in 1829. They manufacture high and low pressure steam engines, stationary and for boats, sugar mills, sugar pans, hydraulic presses, pumps and machinery for mines, blowing cylinders for furnaces, and iron and brass castings of every description and weight, and have provided on the Delaware below the Reading Rail Road Depot, a commodious shop and wharf, with a crane, expressly for the construction and repair of steam boat engines & boilers
Description: Advertisement for the iron foundry established by the Morris family in 1828 at 16th and Market streets. Contains two views above and below the title. Upper view shows the interior of the foundry where in the center a foreman talks with a gentleman, possibly a Morris, surrounded by workers and machinery. In the right, iron workers use a hoist to pour a cauldron of liquid ore into a mold near an open entranceway. In the left, a worker is bent over and using a hammer near humongous cogs and cylinders. Tools including a sledge hammer, pliers, and shovels rest on the floor of the shop and pulleys hang from the ceiling. Description: Advertisement looking down the alley way of the brewery, also known as Eagle Brewery, established in 1829. Includes the "Pale Ale Brewery Counting House" (left) and adjoining and adjacent processing buildings. In the foreground, within the doorway of the red brick counting house, a clerk interacts with a drayman. The brewery employee hands the driver a small piece of paper as the deliveryman also holds the reigns of his horse harnessed to a dray loaded with beer barrels. The horse wears blinders. Behind the clerk, a gentleman holding a mug of beer stands with another man in the doorway. In the alley, laborers, some in aprons, transport barrels out off a three-archway storage building, pause near a dray loaded with barrels, and stand by a row of barrels near a doorway of a building opposite the counting house. Description: Advertisement for Nathan Dunn's Chinese collection housed in the lower floors of the Philadelphia Museum also known as the Chinese Museum that was built 1836-1838. Contains an ornamental border, vignettes, a landscape view, and descriptive text. Border includes filigree and 4 banners adorned with Chinese lettering. Vignettes show a Chinese woman from high society at leisure; a Chinese peasant man, and peasant woman with baby; and a Chinese fisherman on his boat. View shows a Chinese landscape including a pagoda and sailing vessels on the water. Description: Advertisement showing the three-story, three bay building with swan neck pediments flanking the sign "Loud & Brothers Piano Forte Manufacturers" at 150 Chestnut Street (ie. north side of the 600 block of Chestnut Street) across from the Philadelphia Arcade. Pianos are on display in their wide, decorative shop window and laurel wreaths adorn the transom windows above the two doorways to the shop. The piano manufactory, the largest of its kind in the country at the time, was purportedly behind the store. Title: Stephen P. Morris & Co. Manufacturers of wrought iron welded tubes for gas and other purposes Philadelphia
Description: Illustrated advertisement and price sheet for wrought iron pipes. Nineteen figures with numbers corresponding to the list below illustrate the available "tubes," including various bends, a "reducing socket," T and cross branches, and a burner jet. Also contains a vignette depicting the seal of Pennsylania featuring two horses and an eagle flanking a shield. Morris, Tasker, and Morris was founded by Stephen Morris in 1821 as a stove and grate manufactory. In the late 1820’s, Henry Morris and Thomas Tasker joined the firm which was renamed S.P. Morris & Co. Circa 1836 the firm was renamed Morris, Tasker, & Morris when Wistar Morris assumed the position of Stephen and the firm began to manufacture gas pipes. In 1856, the firm was renamed Morris, Tasker & Co. Description: Clever advertisement in the style of trompe l'oeil containing examples of the lithographer's work interlayered on top of a black background. Includes billheads, bills of laden, checks, maps and plans, marine and landscape views, portraiture, animal portraiture, sheet music, professional cards and advertisements. Some of the corners of the prints curl up. Pictorial elements of note include a portrait of Aloys Senefelder, the inventor of lithography; the business card of lithographic artist "A. Newsam"; advertising prints showing Duval's "Lithographic Establishment," and the Merchant's Exchange; and sheets of advertisement text in script promoting Duval's ability to "execute orders at short notice," his types of prints, and the advantages of the "facility" and "cheapness" of "facsimiles" for businesses.
