Description: Print trimmed and lacking caption., Poulson's inscription on recto: Mar. 1849; Market Street., Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half-story manufactory operated by John M. Melloy and Robert Ford at 291 Market Street, later renumbered 723, promoting the "lowest rates", "quick sales & small profits," and "metallic roofing." The building heavily adorned with signage and product advertisements including a large scale model of a coffee pot contains prominent displays of tinware in the shop window, on the store shelves, and near the open cellar door. Near the front of the shop, a couple strolls, two laborers lift a crate onto a horse-drawn sulky, and a female customer enters the store. An African American peddler with tray and bell passes a line of crates on the sidewalk. Tinsmiths work near the third floor windows. Melloy & Ford, a partnership established in 1849, was in business until 1861 when Melloy entered partnership with Isaac Smith at the same address.

Phillips' busy four-story equestrian store at 12 South Fifth Street selling "ladies and gentlemen's saddles, single and double harnesses, and bridles and whips." Saddles, bridles, harnesses, and blankets are prominently displayed in the storefront window and on the building facade. On the upper floors, several employees work by open windows. Elegantly dressed patrons converse near the entryway and four horses are lined up in the street awaiting and receiving service including a pair reined in by an African American coach driver. Partial view of the adjacent building containing the carpenter, W.B. Morrell, is visible. Lacey and Phillips partnership, established in 1845 remained at the site until 1852.

Description: Date of publication supplied by Wainwright., Advertisement depicting the four-story shop containing signage advertising wines & liquors. The doors, windows, and cellar are open for business. Inside the shop, wine casks, crates, jugs, and bottles line the floors and a laborer raises a cask with a pulley. Outside, a laborer loads casks onto a horse-drawn cart as nearby. An African American peddler with a basket and ringing a bell passes by. Partial views of the adjacent stores, possibly an apothecary and bolting cloth business, are visible. Hibler, operated the wine business at the location from 1840 until 1844, where afterward he operated a grocery.

North Second Street., Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half story warehouse operated by Frederick Foering and C.A. Thudium at 87 North Second Street. In the open entranceways, a clerk assists a female shopper and an African American laborer lifts a stove. Displays of stoves line the sidewalk and the store walls. On the second floor near open windows, white laborers work. A horse-drawn cart departs an adjoining exitway. Foering and Thudium, one of the city's first domestic stove manufacturers, started in business in 1828, and operated on North Second Street from 1845 until 1847.

Description: Print trimmed and lacking caption., Poulson inscription on recto: Dec. 1848 No. 327 1/2 Market Street., Select link below for a digital image., Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half-story building containing the hotel and tavern operated by John Thompson at 329 Market Street and Robert Denny's saddles and harness store at 327 1/2 Market Street. Harnesses and other horse paraphernalia hang from the shop's display window and entranceways, including a stable entrance marked, "Entertainment for Horses." In front of the building, a man with his horse enters the marked entrance; a clerk from Denny's converses with a customer by a stack of trunks; and other horses rest nearby and in front of the adjacent hardware store, including one attached to a sulky attended by an African American man. Hotel guests stand near the second floor windows and enter the hotel entrance. The hotel, tavern, and harness and saddle store resided together at the site only for the year 1848 to 1849.

Description: Advertisement containing an interior view of the shop at 116 Chestnut Street (ie. 320 Chestnut Street) after a daguerreotype depicting a long row of presses lined along the perimeter of the room near tall windows for natural light. Pressmen work on stones propped flat and on an angle. The man at the first press rolls ink onto a stone, as another man, probably an apprentice, carries a stone from the reserve of fresh stones arranged and stacked on the shelves on the opposite wall. Bottles and other supplies line the shelves between each window, and several packaged stones are piled on the floor in the foreground awaiting shipment. View includes a standing press. A foreman, possibly Wagner or McGuigan, attired in a suit observes the printers. Description: Advertisement for the iron foundry established at the 100 block of Franklin Street in 1841. Shows an exterior view of the foundry complex adorned with the company sign "Franklin Iron Works. J. T. Sutton & Co. Iron Foundry, Steam Engines, Boilers & Machinery Of All Descriptions." Cylinders, shafts, and wheels lay on the sidewalk in front of the building. Workers are visible at many of the numerous entranceways, hoisting, talking with company officers, and spotting machinery. Description: Advertisement for the Philadelphia branch (est. circa 1843) of the rail express service company started by Alvin Adams of Boston in 1840. Shows a line of freight cars being pulled by a fireball and lightning across train tracks on a stone culvert in a wilderness setting. The cars are marked with the city and name of its recipients, including Boston & New York, Adams & Co.; Philada. & Baltimore, Adams & Co.; Baltimore, Washington & Richmond, Rogers & Co.; Baltimore & Wheeling, Green & Co. Title: Reliance Portable Boat Company's line of portable iron boats for the transportation of goods between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh
Description: Advertisement for the shipping company established by John Dougherty as Reliance Transportation Company circa 1835. Company operated on the Allegheny Portage Railroad, a system of inclined planes opened in 1834 that transported canal boats, box cars, and carriages by horse and steam engine to connect the east and west branches of the Pennsylvania Main Line canal. Contains two views of canal boats on trucks being transported on the railroad by locomotive. Upper image depicts a bird's eye view of a locomotive that is hauling boat sections approaching an incline to the canal. A long canal boat traverses the waterway. In the background, a farm and farmland are visible on the numerous hillsides. Lower image depicts a close-up view of the portable boats being hauled on the round-bottomed trucks by a locomotive exiting a tunnel and passing dwellings along the route. Description: Advertisement showing heavy pedestrian and street activity in front of the large, prominent hotel opened in 1826 following the conversion by John Rea of several properties at 419-423 Chestnut Street. Several carriages, including one marked "U.S. Hotel" line up in front of the hotel. A group of men stand near the entranceway as other guests exit doorways and stand on the verandah. Signage for businesses tenanting the lower floor of the eastern section of the hotel is visible. Businesses include M. J. & C. Croll, tailor; G. W. Duffy's, fashionable hat & cap store; Blanchard & Rock, paper hangings. View includes adjacent buildings, including Farmers & Mechanics Bank (425-429) and W. Christie, upholsterer (411). Description: Advertisement containing classical architectural elements and figures to promote the lithographic studio of the English-born artist Alfred Hoffy. Image includes the advertising text printed on a centrally-located monument adorned with column details. An eagle rests on the top of the stone piece. A woman in Roman garb holding a bird on her finger stands to the left and a boy in Roman garb clutching a bird to his chest stands to the right of the monument. Description: Advertisement showing the factory complex between Washington, Federal, Fourth, and Fifth streets for the firm established in 1836 as Merrick & Towne (renamed Merrick & Son in 1849 and Merrick & Sons in 1852). In the right of the image, several laborers remove a pipe through the stable-like doors of a warehouse near which a pile of pipes lies on the sidewalk. A boy, sitting on a hydrant, with a dog watches the scene from the opposite corner. To the rear of the warehouse, a horse-drawn cart filled with coal enters the fenced courtyard. Piles of pipe are visible in the yard and workers are visible at the doorway of the workshop bordering the yard. Past the courtyard, a laborer pushes a hand cart by another workshop. Description: Advertisement showing J.O. Thornley Coffee Roaster & Spice Factory at 1215 South Third Street in Southwark. Depicts the factory buildings, including a “coffee roasting” facility, in the left of the image. Horse-drawn factory wagons, one marked “J.O. Thornley Coffee Roaster & Spice Factory Southwark,” drawn by horse are parked in, and arrive and depart from around the factory, including the alley between the complex and a residence (Mrs. Smith). Description: Advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer at 120, i.e., 324 Chestnut Street. Shows two well-dressed women in a boudoir that is decorated with carpet, drapes, and a candlelabra. One woman combs her long, lush, flowing hair with her back to a nightstand with a mirror as she looks at the second woman with short wispy hair. Perfume bottles rest on the night stand. Also contains an ornamental border including columns and advertising text. Text promotes the stopping of "decay in the middle of decline, to preserve what is beautiful" through use of Haul's "Hair Restorative" that "stops the falling off of Hair, promotes the growth of it, vivifies the roots and the skin and gives a new vigor to hair." Description: Advertisement showing the storefront with large display windows of "Edward Roussel, Foreign Perfumery & Fancy Articles, French Perfumery, Mineral Water" at 114, i.e., 318 Chestnut Street. Within the store, a clerk serves mineral water to a couple at the counter. The woman sits, her parasol by her side as the man stands. Tall glass-door cabinets rise behind the clerk. Description: Advertisement showing the busy small manufactory complex established by Simons in 1831. Several laborers work diligently in the yard, and at the windows and workshops of the wheel making establishment. In the yard, workers carry slabs of wood from a large pile, fashion wheels near an open fire, and lead a horse-drawn truck of wagon parts past an idle truck marked "Wm. Massey, New Orleans" and wagons marked "T. Craven Old Point Virginia" and "U.S. 1720." Wagon wheels and frames rest along the buildings where laborers toil away at the windows. Also show workers hoisting wagon bodies, blacksmithing at an anvil, working on a wheel and wagon body, and operating a large piece of machinery in the workshops.
