Description: Advertisement showing a view of the glue and animal product manufactories of Charles Baeder on a lot of land on the 1700 block of North Sixth Street. Includes the seven-story glue works with cupola and the smaller multi-story starch, hide whip, and curled hair factory. Two outbuildings with active smoke stacks stand between the factories. Trees and bushes are visible on the property. A horse-drawn cart travels in the foreground. The firm, established in 1828 by Baeder, became the premier manufacturer of its kind in the United States. Title: Thomas Hargrave ornamental carver and sculptor s.w. corner of Ridge Road & 13th St
Description: Advertisement showing the three-story business facade, adorned with signage, and the adjacent marble yard at N. 13th Street and Ridge Avenue (east of North Broad and north of Spring Garden streets). A female patron enters the doorway of the establishment in which a monument adorned with a figure in recline is visible within the window. Below the window, signage for "Union Refectory. Oysters Terrapins & Game in Season by Charles Epley" hangs. A male patron descends the stairs to the oyster cellar. A man and boy admire the sepulchral monuments and headstones, many ornamented, which crowd the adjacent fenced, marble yard. Ornamentations include eagles, urns, a female figure at recline, and the inscription "Mother." Description: Advertisement showing a southwest view of the three-story storefront, adorned with signage, on the 200 block of Walnut Street. Description: Advertisement showing the factory complex at 608 Delaware Avenue (occupied 1844) for the lead pipe manufactory established in 1841 by George N., Henry B., and William P. Tatham. Factory employees work in front of and at the wharf of the industrial building that is covered with signage. Men lift a barrel with a hoist; guide horse-drawn drays into a courtyard, down an alley, and to be unloaded; move planks of wood; and spray a hose into the river. Description: Advertisement showing the three-and-a-half story building on the 100 block of North Fourth Street for the bookseller, binder, and publisher Thomas Ellwood Chapman. A male patron enters the doorway of the building past advertisements (e.g. Books Stationery) adorning a mantle and the entry. A small broadside hangs in the window of the door, bundles of fibrous material rest atop the mantle, and shelves of books are visible lining the wall of the interior of the store. To the right of the doorway, a woman hunches over, and stands to the side of the closed cellar doors as she looks at one of several books and printed matter displayed in the window. A sign reading "Rags Bought" hangs below. Building facade also contains a wood door, possibly to an alleyway. Chapman opened the bookstore at the address in 1840, and added the bindery in 1843. Description: Advertisement showing the foundry complex in South Philadelphia. Includes the "Black Lead Crucible Manufactory," "Brass & Bell Foundry," an office-like building, and a workshop with a stack spewing smoke. A gentleman enters the office as a laborer pushes a dray on the sidewalk toward an alley out of which a drayman leads his horse-drawn vehicle transporting a large bell. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story double storefronts adorned with signage at 30-32 South Second Street, below Market Street. Massive merchandise displays adorn the windows and front facades of the businesses. At the wareroom, reams of different cloths hang within open windows from rods behind tables covered in swatches and bolts of cloth. A number of patrons, including women and a couple, admire the displays, and enter the open entry through which shadowy figures of female clerks are visible. More merchandise, including bolts of cloth and cloth-covered hat boxes, are visible in showcase spaces on the second floor. At the tea store, couples exit and enter the business in which several boxes of tea are piled between Chinese figurines displayed in the window. A clerk stands within the store. Potted plants adorn the third floor windows between which a large model of a box of tea hangs. In front of the store, boxes of tea are piled under a frame for an awning that displays a sign advertising "Fresh Teas." Manhole covers and a fire hydrant adorn the sidewalk as well. Around the corner of the building, a woman and girl walk past a horse-drawn dray travelling down a side alley to Strawberry Street partially visible in the background. Title: [T. Wattson & Sons, biscuit bakery, 129 North Front Street, Philadelphia]
Description: Advertisement showing the busy four-story factory for the bakery at 129 North Front Street, between Chestnut and Walnut Streets. A gentleman, possibly the proprietor Thomas Wattson, stands in one of the open doorways to the bakery as laborers work around him. Near the doorways, workers load kegs onto a horse-drawn "T. Wattson & Sons Biscuit Bakery" wagon and dray. Other men, hoist kegs to upper receiving windows from a group of several lined in front of the factory. In a few of the windows, men at work and stacks of barrels are visible. Laborers hammer shut and move kegs. Title: Potter & Carmichael, oil cloth manufacturers warehouse, No. 135, North Third Street, Philadelphia Patent oil cloths, for carriages, floors, tables, &c. Transparent window shades; dealers in carpets, &c
Description: Advertisement showing the busy factory complex on Second Street road above the Reading Railroad, i.e., 135 North Third Street above Race Street. Signage reading "Franklin-ville, Oil Cloth Works" adorns the roof of the main factory building around which several workers labor. Laborers stretch cloth on long flat racks and on the side of the main building in which other men move a roll of carpet into a hatch. In the courtyard, laborers load materials into a wagon, and transport materials by hand-cart and horse-drawn dray. Other factory workers pull a long sheet of cloth along the side of a smaller factory building. At the rear of that workshop, men work in and approach a shed. Crates and large packages rest near the pulling racks and are piled in front of the main building. Countryside frames the scene. The firm of Potter & Carmichael moved their warehouse to 135 North Third Street from 568 North Third Street (above Poplar Street) circa 1848. Title: Public baths. Thos. E. J. Kerrison's arcade-baths
Description: Advertisement showing the public bathhouse originally built 1826-1827 as a shop gallery after the designs of John Haviland at 615-619 Chestnut Street. Patrons enter one of the four arches to the visible interior of the arcade that contains stairs over a central enclosed space that is flanked by corridors of rooms. The front facade also contains statuary and advertising signs in two niches above gated cellar entrances to "D. Gibb, Franklin House." The signs promote the tenant oyster house. Also shows a boy posting a broadside on the building and a man and woman passerby. Kerrison operated the baths 1845-1849. Description: Advertisement for the three-and-a-half story storefront, covered in signage, on the 200 block of Green Street. Signs advertise Wetherill's Whitelead, drugs, medicines, paints, oils, glass, dyestuffs, "window glass of all sizes," picture glass, "cheap glass for hot beds," "white lead warranted pure by the ton or pound," ready mixed paints, linseed oil, plasters, pot ash, and soda. A male patron enters one of the two open entryways that are lined with barrels and sacks, some open. Within the store, two clerks, one assisting a customer, stand at the counter. Rows of shelves with pharmaceuticals line the wall behind the men. Several canisters and decanters are displayed in the three showcase windows at the front and side of the building. Within the second floor windows, stacks of boxes are visible. At the street corner, crates and boxes of pharmaceuticals, including indigo and oil of vitrol, line the sidewalk and are loaded on a horse-drawn dray accompanied by the driver. Also shows the open cellar, a model of a mortar and pestle adorning the store, and a partial view of the adjacent business with sign "..olds." Shoemaker operated the drugstore under this name and at this location 1837-1856. Shoemaker apprenticed at the store in the 1830's when operated by William Scattergood. He developed an alternative to homemade plasters and was possibly the first U.S. manufacturer of glycerin. Description: Advertisement showing Robert Wood's long and narrow, four-story steam iron railing works on the 1100 block of Ridge Road. Signboards on the facade advertise "Wood's steam iron railing manufactory all kinds of ornamental & architectural iron work made to order," and "manufacturer of iron railings for cemeteries." Laborers are visible through the open windows and doors on all levels of the factory. Two men carry an iron piece into the ground level of the building, near a display of ornamental iron sculptures, that includes a large lyre. Description: Advertisement showing the three-story office building with an addition and attached to the nine-story "Sugar Refinery" (rear) at the southwest corner of Willow Street and Old York Road, i.e., York Avenue. Description: View of Alfred M. Herkness' circular auction house on the 800 block of George, i.e., Sansom Street. Signage adorns the building in which a man, possibly Herkness, stands in the doorway. Signs advertise the sale of horses, carriages, and harnesses "twice every week" and harnesses are tacked along the doorway. Carriages, harnessed to horses and free-standing, line the streets, and men wait at the side of the building. Also shows the neighboring Fifth Baptist Church, a man waiting on horseback, and a gentleman at the opposite street corner. Originally erected for the exhibition of a cyclorama of Jerusalem, the building was acquired by Herkness in 1847 or 48. Herkness remained at this site until 1913. Description: Advertisement showing the ornately decorated storefront of William H. Horstmann & Sons clothing and military supply store. Patriotic bunting consisting of the names of artists J.H. Otten, carver and J. Gibson, pinxt, and a shield sumounted by an eagle, flags, swords and spears surround a sign that reads, "E Pluribus Unum, Horstmann," above the first level. Drums, military helmets, flags, and swords flank this central display. Laurel wreaths hang above the fasces that form columns on each side of the shop's two doorways and two bay windows. Tassels are visible in the left bay window, while various types of military hemlets are displayed in rows in the right window. Shields and crossed arrows adorn the transom lights above the windows and doors. Wm. H. Description: Advertisement showing the adjoining four-story storefronts adorned with signage and displayed windows above Market Street on North Fourth Street. At the Womrath & Neville storefront (15), a clerk is visible helping a female patron through the open entry to the building. Shelves of merchandise line the wall behind the employee. Fringes, tassles, a framed graphic, a small broadside, and other trimmings fill the display windows marked "Hosiery," "Trimmings," "Bindings," and "Tapes & Thread." Another clerk stands at an upper floor window and two crates, one marked "W&N," line the sidewalk. Between the stores, a woman and girl stand in front of an open entry to a stairwell and between the cellar doors of the establishments. The girl points at a fur piece in the display window of the "George F. Womrath Fur Store" (13). Description: Advertisement showing a bird's eye view of the chemical works of Harrison Brothers near Fitler and Harrison Streets in Frankford, showing from left to right, the buildings containing "Pyro Acid Works," "Sulphuric Acid Works," "Sugar Lead Works," "White Lead Works," "Alum Works," "Copperas Works," and the company office. The bustling scene includes laborers pushing wheel barrows, putting coal in a furnace, and hoisting barrels using a block and tackle pulley system. Piles of lumber, barrels, and vats cover the ground, and smoke rises from the chimneys of the buildings within the enclosed compound. A man walks along the periphery of the fence in the foreground, between two gates. A loaded wagon enters the left gate, as a dray exits through the right. Description: Advertisement showing the three-and-a-half story storefront for the manufacturer on North Second Street between Noble and Green streets (i.e., 500 block). A store clerk, possibly the proprietor stands at the open doorway, a quill in one hand and the other resting on a stack of boxes. He watches a laborer load boxes onto the "A.H. Eckhardt Soap & Candle Manufacturer No. 326 N. 2nd Street" horse-drawn wagon parked in the street. Boxes, jars, crates, and other small containers adorn the large display window and a crate resting on a table is visible through the doorway. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story hotel built by John L. Ridgway in 1844 at 181-183 (i.e., 517-519) Chestnut Street. Male and female guests sit under an awning on the front porch, enter the building, and stroll on the second floor balcony. Other patrons are visible, through the open windows and entrance, in the saloon and at the front desk. Curtains adorn several of the upper windows and rolled carpets are showcased in the display windows of the tenanting business of "J. & B. Orne." Description: Advertisement depicting a bird's eye view looking northwest at Robert Buist's enclosed nursery and greenhouses on Twelfth Street, south of Lombard Street. Two long rows of hotbed frames extend west from Twelfth Street and run the length of Rodman Street behind a three-story building marked "140" (a preconsolidation address). Men and women stroll along the central walk that separates the two rows of hotbed frames inside the grounds, accessed from Twelfth Street by the entrance gate adorned with the proprietor's name "R. Buist". Outside of the nursery, several men and women converse on the sidewalk. One of the men holds a driving whip, and is presumably the driver of the stalled horse-drawn carriage in front of the entrance. Another driver stands in front of a team of horses pulling a covered cart, grasps the reins, and leads them along Rodman Street toward a man attempting to rein in a rearing horse. Also shows men, women, children, and dogs on the sidewalk. A few trees dot the empty landscape behind the nursery. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story, three-bay building tenanted by the china, glass and queensware business of Wm. P. Hacker at 60 (ie. 108) North Second Street. Pitchers, vases and bowls in various shapes and sizes are stacked on shelves lining the walls of the shop interior, and are also displayed in the storefront window, which is flanked by two wide doors on the ground level. In the left doorway, a man lifts a barrel using a pulley system running all the way to the top floor of the building. Another worker loads hampers onto a horse-drawn dray. Barrels and hampers line the sidewalk and cobblestone street in front of the shop. Signboards marked "china, glass" and "queens-ware" cover the front facade of Hacker's shop. Also shows bits of the interior of adjacent properties, including the stairway in 58 North Second Street (left) and casks (presumably of wine) in 62 North Second Street (right). A man and woman stroll by arm in arm on the sidewalk. William P. Hacker moved his business to several nearby properties on North Second Street, starting out at 64, moving to 62 and then inhabiting 60 in 1851.
